Viewers Respond to Presidential Debate, Say Romney Won First Round

The first of three presidential debates kicked off last night atthe University of Denver, where President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney went head to head on dominant campaign issues of taxes, healthcare and the economy.

For an hour and a half, both men laid out their plans for president. While Romney played down questions about his tax plan, he criticized Obama’s tax policies of the past four years.

“Under the president’s policies, middle-income Americans have been buried,” Romney said. “They’re just being crushed. Middle income Americans have seen their income come down by $4,300. This is a tax in and of itself. I’ll call it the economy tax. It’s been crushing.”

Obama, on the other hand, argued that his policies were working to bring Americans back from the financial crisis he inherited, and criticized Romney for not being specific on his proposed tax plans.”At some point, the American people have to ask themselves if the reason that Gov. Romney is keeping all these plans secret is because they’re too good,” Obama said, adding the answer was “no.”

Despite the back and forth banter, a poll cast by CNN found that registered voters gave the debate to Romney by a 67 percent to 25 percent margin. The reason? Some reports say Romney was more aggressive, appearing more confident and at ease than Obama, who appeared dry and shaky.

“Mitt Romney took the lead for me last night,” said Nancy Moreno, 22, a Columbia College student. “Romney had his plans and points in order, he came to battle, but President Obama just showed up unarmed.  This debate has caught my attention, and is making reconsider who I am going to vote for.”

“I was disappointed by Obama’s answers,” said Silvia Martinez, 37. “He didn’t seem like himself, stuttering and tripping over his words. I really hope he does better next debate.”

Although shaky, Lindsey Goldberg, 28, believes Obama appeared confident on some fronts.

“I thought Obama was strong on the subject of healthcare,” said Goldberg. “He embraced the term Obamacare, pointed out that it was based on the Massachusetts plan, corrected Romney that his plan does not protect individuals with preexisting conditions, and identified Romney’s plan for what it is – a voucher system.”

Apart from both men’s demeanor, last night’s debate gave viewers more than their share to talk about.

Jim Lehrer, the moderator, seemed to lose control of the debate early on, giving Twitter users plenty to tweet about.

“Think of how neat this debate would be with a moderator,” said Twitter user @BenKuchera.

 Sesame Street character Big Bird also made an appearance at last night’s debate as Romney said he would stop a subsidy to PBS.

“I like PBS. I love Big Bird. I actually like you, too. But I’m not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for it,” he said

This comment riled up Twitter users. Multiple Big Bird Twitter accounts were created, some displaying images of Big Bird carrying an unemployment sign.

But while the debate had its number of amusing moments, Moreno believes that Americans need to focus on what’s important—choosing the best leader for the country.

“I’m looking forward to the next debate and keeping an open mind. I will say this though, our country needs a strong leader. As Americans we need a more aggressive leader not just someone who is going to make promises and not execute them,” she said.

The next presidential debate is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 8 p.m.

Televidentes Responden al Debate Presidencial, Dicen que Romney Ganó la Primera Ronda

 El primero de tres debates presidenciales dio inicio anoche en la Universidad de Denver donde el Presidente Obama y el Gob. Mitt Romney tuvieron un encuentro directo sobre cuestiones dominantes de la campaña tales como los impuestos, los cuidados de la salud y la economía.

Durante hora y media, ambos hombres expusieron sus planes presidenciales. A medida que Romney minimizaba las preguntas acerca de su plan fiscal, criticaba las políticas fiscales de Obama de los últimos cuatro años.

“Bajo las políticas del presidente, los estadounidenses de ingresos medios han estado enterrados”, dijo Romney. “Están siendo aplastados. Los estadounidenses de ingresos medios han visto sus ingresos bajar por $4,300. Este es un impuesto de por sí. Lo llamaré el impuesto económico. Ha sido aplastante”.

Obama, por su parte, argumentó que sus políticas estaban funcionando para sacar a los estadounidenses de la crisis financiera que heredó, y criticó a Romney por no ser específico en sus planes fiscales propuestos.

“En un punto, los estadounidenses se tienen que preguntar si la razón por la que el Gob. Romney está manteniendo todos estos planes en secreto es porque no sirven”, dijo Obama, añadiendo que la respuesta era “no”.

A pesar del intercambio de bromas, un sondeo realizado por la cadena CNN encontró que los electores registrados le dieron el debate a Romney por un margen del 67 por ciento a un 25 por ciento. ¿La razón? Algunos reportes indican que Romney fue más agresivo, que parecía sentirse más seguro y más cómodo que Obama, que parecía seco y nervioso.

“Para mí Mitt Romney estuvo al frente anoche”, dijo Nancy Moreno, 22, estudiante del Columbia College. “Romney tenía sus planes y puntos en orden, vino a la batalla, pero el Presidente Obama llegó desarmado. Este debate ha acaparado mi atención, y me está haciendo reconsiderar por quién voy a votar”.

“Me decepcionaron las respuestas de Obama”, dijo Silvia Martínez, 37. “No parecía ser él mismo, tartamudeando y tropezándose con sus palabras. De verdad espero que le vaya mejor en el próximo debate”.

Aunque tembloroso, Lindsey Goldberg, 28, cree que Obama se mostraba seguro en algunos frentes.

“Creo que Obama estuvo fuerte en el tema de la salud”, dijo Goldberg. “Él abarcó el término Obamacare, señaló que fue basado en el plan de Massachusetts, corrigió a Romney en lo de que su plan no protege a las personas con condiciones ya existentes, e identificó el plan de Romney por lo que es—un sistema de vales”.

Aparte del comportamiento de ambos hombres, el debate de anoche les dio a los televidentes más de la cuenta de qué hablar.

Jim Lehrer, el moderador, parecía haber perdido el control del debate al principio, dándoles a los usuarios de Twitter suficiente de qué twitear.

“Piensen qué padre estaría este debate con un moderador”, dijo el usuario de Twitter @BenKuchera.

El personaje de Plaza Sésamo Big Bird también hizo acto de presencia en el debate de anoche ya que Romney dijo que detendría un subsidio a la televisora PBS.

“Me gusta PBS. Adoro a Big Bird. Es más los adoro a ustedes también. Pero no voy a seguir gastando dinero en cosas para conseguir dinero prestado con China para pagarlas”, dijo.

Este comentario puso locos a los usuarios de Twitter. Múltiples cuentas de Big Bird fueron creadas en Twitter, algunas mostrando imágenes de Big Bird cargando un letrero de desempleo.

Pero aunque el debate tuvo sus momentos entretenidos, Moreno cree que los estadounidenses necesitan enfocarse en lo que es importante—elegir al mejor líder para el país.

“Estoy esperando el próximo debate y manteniendo una mente abierta. Aunque diré esto, nuestro país necesita un líder fuerte. Como estadounidenses necesitamos a un líder más agresivo no únicamente a alguien que vaya a hacer promesas y no las ejecute”, dijo.

El próximo debate presidencial está programado para el martes, 16 de octubre a las 8 p.m.
