Back of the Yards Officers of the Month

On Tuesday, Sept. 18, the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council recognized the following police officers as Officers of the Month during their quarterly meeting.

On Sept. 5, 9th District Officers Erin Murphy and John Sego observed two male suspects walking southbound on Racine Ave. matching the description of the burglary offenders reported earlier in a call. While talking to one of the subjects, Officer Murphy noticed what appeared to be a gun handle sticking out of his pants pocket. A chrome colored, .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol loaded with four live rounds was recovered from a juvenile gang member.

On August 18, 9th District Officers Al Philip and Chris Hacket responded to a man-with-a-gun call in an alley behind a house on the 4300 block of South Marshfield Avenue. After entering the alley, the officers observed the suspect holding a black pistol. After noticing the officers, the suspect ran back into the yard and entered a residence. As officers gave chase into the residence, the offender entered a bedroom, threw the gun to the floor then entered a closet. The officers secured a .22 caliber semi automatic pistol and took the suspect into custody. Additionally after a search of the bedroom, officers also found a plastic bag containing 35 rounds of .22 caliber bullets.

As 9th District Officers Mike Korwing and Tony Berg arrived to the scene of a burglary call on July 2, they found the victim in the backyard trying to hold on to the offender. The officers immediately placed the female offender into custody, as the victim informed the officers that as she came home she could hear people inside the apartment and upon entering, she observed the offender and a black suspect running out the back door in an attempt to get away. The victim fought with the offender until the officers showed up.

El 5 de septiembre, los oficiales del Distrtio 9 Erin Murphy y John Sego observaron a dos sospechosos del sexo masculino caminando en dirección sur en la Avenida Racine que concordaban con la descripción de los delincuentes de robo que habían sido reportados anteriormente en un llamado. Mientras hablaba con uno de los sujetos, el oficial Murphy notó lo que parecía ser la cacha de una pistola que salía del bolsillo de su pantalón. Una pistola de cromo de calibre .380 semiautomática cargada con cuatro tiros fue recuperada de un joven pandillero.

El 18 de agosto, los oficiales del Distrito 9 Al Philip y Chris Hacket respondieron a un llamado de un hombre armado en un callejón detrás de una casa en la cuadra 4300 al Sur de la Avenida Marshfield. Después de entrar al callejón, los oficiales observaron que el sospechoso sujetaba una pistola negra. Después de percatarse de los oficiales, el sospechoso corrió hacia el jardín y entró en la residencia. A medida que los oficiales comenzaron la persecución dentro de la residencia, el ofensor entró a una recamara, lanzó el arma al piso luego entró a un clóset. Los oficiales aseguraron una pistola semiautomática de calibre .22 y pusieron al sospechoso bajo custodia. Además después de buscar en la recamara, los oficiales también encontraron una bolsa plástica que contenía 35 tiros de balas calibre .22.

Mientras los oficiales del Distrito 9 Mike Korwing y Tony Berg llegaban a la escena de un llamado por robo el 2 de julio, encontraron a la víctima en su jardín tratando de sujetar a la delincuente. Los oficiales inmediatamente pusieron a la mujer bajo custodia, mientras que la víctima informaba a los oficiales que cuando llegaba a su casa logró escuchar que había personas dentro de su departamento y al entrar, observó a la delincuente y a un sospechoso afroamericano tratando de salir por la puerta trasera en un intento por darse a la fuga. La víctima luchó con la delincuente hasta la llegada de los oficiales.
