Chicago Artists Month features events in Little Village, Bridgeport and Pilsen

It’s a rare occasion when the city’s visual artists, galleries and art organizations come together to showcase the vibrant array of talent in Chicago. Yet for 17 years, Chicago Artists Month has been doing just that, highlighting the city’s array of unique and community-based art and artists through featured events, exhibits and workshops.

Through the month of October, Chicago Artists Month will bring art to neighborhood blocks around the city. With so many events planned all month long, we’ve made a quick guide to make the trek a little easier to navigate, highlighting some of the best events in the neighborhoods of Pilsen, Bridgeport and Little Village. Take a look.

Arte en el Barrio: Mes de los Artistas de Chicago presenta eventos en La Villita, Bridgeport y Pilsen 

Es rara la ocasión cuando los artistas visuales de la ciudad, las galerías y organizaciones de arte se unen para presentar el vibrante conjunto de talento en Chicago. Sin embargo durante 17 años, el Mes de los Artistas en Chicago ha estado haciendo justo eso, destacando la colección de arte única en base a la comunidad y a los artistas de Chicago a través de eventos destacados, exposiciones y talleres.

A lo largo del mes de octubre, el Mes de los Artistas de Chicago traerá arte a las cuadras de los vecindarios de la ciudad. Con tantos eventos planeados durante todo el mes, hemos compuesto una guía rápida para hacer el recorrido un poco más fácil de navegar, destacando algunos de los mejores eventos en los vecindarios de Pilsen, Bridgeport y La Villita.

LITTLE VILLAGE

Little Village Arts Festival 

While Little Village doesn’t count with an established art corridor like Bridgeport or Pilsen, it hasn’t stopped local artists from creating their own alternative pop-up studios to showcase the mounds of work being produced in the area. For three days, the art organization VillArte will offer galleries, workshops, and arts and crafts, providing residents of all ages to join in on the creations.

Friday, Oct. 5 – 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday, Oct 6 & 7 – noon – 6 p.m.

La Villita

Aunque La Villita no cuenta con un corredor de arte establecido como Bridgeport o Pilsen, no ha impedido que los artistas locales creen sus propios estudios alternativos ambulantes para exhibir los montones de obras que se están produciendo en el área. Durante tres días la organización de arte VillaArte, ofrecerá galerías, talleres, y artesanías y manualidades, brindando a los residentes de todas las edades la oportunidad de unirse en las creaciones.

BRIDGEPORT

Bridgeport Block Party

Art, food trucks, music and beer. That’s what the organizers behind the Bridgeport Block Party will be providing to kick off Chicago Artists Month. Dive into three locations in the neighborhood—Co-Prosperity Sphere, Bridgeport Arts Center and Zhou B. Art Center—and experience new art exhibits, beats by local DJs and rare beer at the Mash Tun Oktoberfest.

Friday, Oct. 5 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. (Co-Prosperity Sphere until 11 p.m.)

Fiesta de Cuadra en Bridgeport

Arte, camiones de comida, música y cerveza. Eso es lo que los organizadores detrás de la Fiesta de Cuadra de Bridgeport estarán ofreciendo para dar inicio al Mes de los Artistas de Chicago. Visita tres localidades en el vecindario—Co-Prosperity Sphere, Bridgeport Arts Center, y Zhou B. Arts Center—y presencia nuevas exhibiciones de arte, los ritmos de DJs locales y cerveza rara en el Mash Tun Oktoberfest.

Creative Willpower Panel Discussion

In order to answer the question, “What does it take to build a successful art career,” artists painted work that defined the words of “will” and “power.” These same artists will participate in a panel discussion to answer questions about their work, moderated by Luis De La Torre. The discussion will culminate with music from House DJ Glenn Underground.

Saturday, Oct. 6 – 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Discusión de Panel Fuerza de Voluntad Creativa

Con el fin de responder a la pregunta “Qué se necesita para formar una exitosa carrera en las artes”, los artistas pintaron obras que definieron las palabras “voluntad” y “fuerza”. Estos mismos artistas participarán en una discusión de panel para responder preguntas sobre su obra., moderada por Luis De La Torre. La discusión culminará con música del DJ Glenn Underground.

Bridgeport Art Walk

Like every third Friday of the month, Bridgeport will open its galleries and studios to the neighborhood and invite residents to artists’ workspaces at its three-day Art Walk. Make sure to visit Zhou B Art Center where five of its floors will filled with a mix of galleries, studio and special event spaces all featuring various artists’ work.

Friday, Oct. 19 – 6 p.m. To 10 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 20 – noon to 6 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 21 – noon to 5 p.m.

Paseo del Arte de Bridgeport

Como cada tercer viernes del mes, Bridgeport abrirá sus galerías y estudios al vecindario e invitará a los residentes a los espacios de trabajo de los artistas en el Paseo del Arte de tres días. Asegúrate de visitar el Zhou B. Art Center en donde cinco de sus pisos estarán llenos con una combinación de galerías, estudios y espacios de eventos especiales, todos mostrando las obras de varios artistas.

The Installation Experiment

Seven artists will exhibit their installation creations in seven storefronts along the 1800 block of S. Halsted Street in the Chicago Arts District. The installations range from a bed full of junk mail, cotton candy-looking raindrops and wooden-carved racecars. The Installation Experiment includes work from Chicago-based artists Nikki Renee Anderson, Gergda Meyer Bernstein, Barbara Cooper, Chelsea Culp and Ben Foch, Barbara Hashimoto, and Bernard Williams.

Runs through Wednesday, Oct. 21

Opening Reception: Friday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m.

Special performances on Fridays Oct. 5 and Oct. 12 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday and Sunday Oct. 6 – Oct. 7 from noon to 7 p.m.

El Experimento de Instalación

Siete artistas exhibirán sus creaciones de instalación en siete tiendas a lo largo de la cuadra 1800 del sur de la Calle Halsted en el Distrito de las Artes de Chicago. Las instalaciones van de una cama llena de correo chatarra, gotas de lluvia que parecen algodón de azúcar y carros de carrera tallados en madera. El Experimento de Instalación incluye obras de los artistas de Chicago Nikki Renee Anderson, Gergda Meyer Bernstein, Barbara Cooper, Chlesea Culp y Ben Foch, Barbara Hashimoto, y Bernard Williams.

Pilsen Open Studios

For two days, 35 galleries, cafes, studios and alternative spaces along the 18th Street corridor will showcase more than 75 artists’ work at Pilsen’s Open Studios. The annual event will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year and will feature a book release of the history of Pilsen’s art movement, a special student showcase of art from youth Pilsen-based CPS schools and a group reception called “Made in Pilsen VII.”

Estudios Abiertos en Pilsen

Durante dos días, 35 galerías, cafés, estudios y espacios alternativos a lo largo del corredor de la Calle 18 exhibirán las obras de más de 35 artistas en los estudios abiertos de Pilsen. El evento anual celebrará su 10º aniversario este año y contará con un lanzamiento de un libro de la historia del movimiento de las artes de Pilsen, una exhibición especial de arte de estudiantes de jóvenes de CPS de Pilsen y una recepción de grupo llamada “Made in Pilsen VII”.

Walking Tour of the Mexican Murals in Pilsen

If you’ve ever wondered what’s the meaning behind all that neighborhood artwork in Pilsen, this is your chance to find out. Walking tours through Pilsen’s lively and pulsating murals will take place during Open Studios where you can learn the stories behind how these pieces of art that have been created in the area since the early 70s.

Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20-21, noon and 2 p.m.

Recorrido a Pie de los Murales Mexicanos de Pilsen

Si alguna vez te has preguntado cuál es el significado detrás de todas las obras de arte en Pilsen, esta es tu oportunidad de saberlo. Recorridos a pie a lo largo de los vivos y pulsantes murales se llevarán a cabo durante Open Studios donde puedes aprender las historias detrás de cómo estas piezas de arte han sido creadas en el área desde principios de los 70s.
