Chilean Rapper Brings Sly and Edgy Hip-Hop to Millennium Park, the Empty Bottle

Chilean female rapper Anita Tijoux turned hip-hop enthusiasts’ heads when she debuted her second solo album “1977” two years ago. Filled with her contagious lyrical fluidity and dominance over the sly use of the Spanish language, the album introduced American audiences to what South Americans already knew—the range and depth of Tijoux’s talent.

While mainstream hip-hop is often rigged with one-note, stereotypical, sexist lyrics – far from the lyricism of social and political empowerment of its golden age— Tijoux has stayed true to the music, spitting out decadent free flowing rhymes that have revived and enthralled the soul and heart of the genre.

None more evident is her third album, “La Bala.” Released earlier this year, the album is equipped with songs that range from backing the recent student protests in Chile (“Shock”) to offering a powerful and effective social critique of the country’s leaders (“Cosas por su Nombre”).

Her ability to cross hip-hop’s language barrier, no doubt, has helped her gain momentum in the States, as her musically solid and socially conscious music devours any need for translation.

In a recent interview with the Boston Globe, Tijoux expressed the role politics plays in her art. Born in France to a Chilean exiled father and French mother, Tijoux moved back to her father’s country when she was 14, after the military dictatorship ended.

“Every political situation that happens in a country, historically speaking, always influences art in general,” she said in the interview.

Complementing her fervent grace, local hip-hop artists Phero, Phillip Morris and Color Brown will be sharing the Empty Bottle stage with Tijoux when she performs in Chicago on July 22.

Phero, a young MC from Pilsen, known for his smooth talking, punch-line grabbing rhyme schemes, said it’s a pleasure to perform alongside someone he is a fan of.

“Anita and I are very honest MCs and love to write about our surroundings. I am a huge supporter of lyrical content and she has plenty of it. We both deliver something special for our audience to leave with,” he said.

Tijoux’s performance at the Empty Bottle on Sunday July 22 is part of her U.S. promotional tour which began in the West Coast in May. Tickets for the show are $10. She will also hold a free concert at Millennium Park on Monday, July 23 at 6:30 p.m.

La rapera chilena Anita Tijoux puso de cabeza a los entusiastas del hip-hop cuando estrenó su segundo álbum como solista “1977” hace dos años. Lleno con su contagiosa fluidez lírica y dominio sobre el uso astuto de la lengua española. El álbum introdujo al público estadounidense a lo que los sudamericanos ya conocían—el alcance y la profundidad del talento de Tijoux.

Mientras que el hip hop es a menudo aparejado con una sola nota, letras estereotípicas y sexistas–lejanas del lirismo del empoderamiento social y político de su época dorada–Tijoux se ha mantenido fiel a la música, escupiendo rimas decadentes de flujo libre que han revivido y cautivado el alma y el corazón del género.

Nada más evidente es su tercer álbum, “La Bala”. Lanzado a principios de este año, el álbum cuenta con canciones que van desde el respaldo de las recientes protestas estudiantiles en Chile (“shock”) hasta ofrecer una poderosa y efectiva crítica social de los líderes del país (“Cosas Por Su Nombre”).

Su capacidad de atravesar la barrera del lenguaje hip hop, sin duda, le ha ayudado a obtener impulso en Estados Unidos, ya que su música musical sólida y socialmente consciente devora a cualquier necesidad de traducción.

En una reciente entrevista con el Boston Globe, Tijoux expresó el papel que la política tiene en su arte. Nacida en Francia, de padre chileno exiliado y madre francesa, Tijoux se trasladó al país de su padre cuando tenía 14 años, después de que la dictadura militar terminó.

“Cada situación política que sucede en un país, históricamente hablando, siempre influye en el arte en general”, dijo en la entrevista.

Complemento su ferviente gracia, los artistas locales de hip-hop Phero, Phillip Morris y Color Brown estarán compartiendo el escenario del Empty Bottle con Tijoux cuando se presente en Chicago el 22 de julio.

Phero, un joven MC de Pilsen, conocido por su fluida habla y esquemas de rima dijo que es un placer presentarse al lado de alguien de quien el es fanático.

“Anita y yo somos unos MCs muy honestos y nos encanta escribir sobre nuestro entorno. Yo soy un gran fanático del contenido lírico y ella tiene bastante. Ambos ofrecemos algo especial para que nuestro público se lleve”, dijo.

La presentación de Tijoux en el Empty Bottle es el Domingo 22 de julio como parte de su gira promocional por EE.UU., que comenzó en la Costa Oeste en mayo. Las entradas para el show cuestan $10. También realizará un concierto gratuito en el parque Millinneum el lunes 23 de Julio a las 6:30 p.m.
