Celebrating 125 Years: The Brief History Behind St. Joseph Parish

Last issue, in honor of St. Joseph Parish’s 125th anniversary in September, The Gate highlighted the efforts of the current pastor, Hugo Londoño, to raise funds in order to repair the building’s towers and provide more social programs for its residents.

For years, the church has been a space where residents of Back of the Yards can gather and worship in their neighborhood.

While Back of the Yards is now largely populated by Latino immigrants and their families, it was not always so.

Organized in 1887, the church was established as the first Polish parish in Back of the Yards, as the neighborhood was home to a large population of Polish immigrants who worked in the Union Stockyards. Before St. Joseph, the nearest Polish parish was St. Mary of Perpetual Help in Bridgeport.

Although the parish was founded in 1887, it didn’t break ground until 1913 at the southeast corner of 48th and Hermitage. It was completed on Sep. 27, 1914 at a cost of $200,000, according to the Polish Genealogical Society of America.

As the Polish population in Back of the Yards grew, two more parishes were formed out of St. Joseph –St. John of God and Sacred Heart.

Today, while much of the Polish population has moved out of the neighborhood as a result of the Union Stockyards closure in the early 1970s, St. Joseph, still celebrates mass in Polish, as well as English and Spanish. Polish masses are held on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. and Sundays at 10:30 a.m.

En la última edición, en honor al 125º aniversario de la Parroquia San José en septiembre, The Gate destacó los esfuerzos de su actual párroco, Hugo Landoño para recaudar fondos con el fin de reparar las torres del edificio y brindar más programas sociales para sus residentes.

Durante años, la iglesia ha sido un espacio donde los residentes de Back of the Yards se pueden reunir y meditar en su vecindario.

Mientras que Back of the Yards ahora está poblado en gran parte por inmigrantes latinos y sus familias, no siempre fue así.

Organizada en 1887, la iglesia fue establecida como la primera parroquia polaca en Back of the Yards, ya que el vecindario era hogar de una gran población de inmigrantes polacos que trabajaban en las empacadoras del Union Stockyards.
