Chicago to Host National Latino Congreso

Gathered at Pilsen’s Casa Michoacán, leaders of local Latino-serving nonprofits kicked off registration for the sixth annual National Latino Congreso, convening in Chicago for the first time from May 17 through May 19.

With its mission to create an open and inclusive space to explore the policy and political agenda of Latino communities in the United States, the 2012 National Latino Congreso will focus on economic justice, immigration and migrant rights, and the Latino vote and civic engagement. Throughout the Congreso, delegates will determine a collective advocacy agenda for the Latino community as it prepares to cast ballots for the upcoming elections in November.

“We really want to create an opportunity for all of us to help each other, work together and propose resolution that will later help to inform us,” said Oscar Chacon, executive director of the National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities (NALACC) during the press briefing.

Normally held in the Southwestern region of the United States, the Congreso’s presence in Chicago marks the first time it will assemble in a city in the Midwest of the United States. Its presence in the city will also present an opportunity to explore transnational issues related to immigration and security, as the upcoming NATO summit will also be held in Chicago for the first time just a day after the Congreso convenes.

Throughout the three days of the Congreso, participants will have an opportunity to attend panel sessions and workshops related to three over-arching themes—economic justice, immigration/migrant rights and Latino vote/civic engagement. Sessions will also discuss a range of related topics such as youth, education, art, culture, environmental justice, transnationalism, gender equity, and community health and well-being.

Chicago Será Cede del Congreso Nacional Latino

Reunidos en Casa Michoacán en Pilsen, los líderes organizaciones latinas locales sin fines de lucro arrancaron los registros para el sexto anual Congreso Nacional Latino, que se reunirá en Chicago por primera vez del 17 al 19 de mayo.

Con su misión de crear un espacio abierto e inclusivo para explorar la agenda política de las comunidades latinas de los Estados Unidos, el Congreso Nacional Latino 2012 se enfocará en la justicia económica, inmigración y derechos migrantes, y en el voto latino y participación cívica. A lo largo del congreso, los delegados determinarán una agenda de incidencia colectiva para la comunidad latina mientras ésta se prepara para emitir su voto en las próximas elecciones de noviembre.

“Realmente queremos crear una oportunidad para todos nosotros para ayudarnos mutuamente, trabajar juntos y proponer una resolución que después nos ayude a informarnos”, dijo Oscar Chacón, director ejecutivo de la Alianza Nacional de Comunidades Latinoamericanas y del Caribe (NALACC) durante la conferencia de prensa.

Normalmente celebrado en la región Suroeste de los Estados Unidos, la presencia del congreso en Chicago marca la primera vez en que se realizará en una ciudad del Medio Oeste de los Estados Unidos. Su presencia en la ciudad también presentará una oportunidad de explorar cuestiones transnacionales relacionadas a la inmigración y seguridad, ya que la próxima cumbre de la OTAN también se realizará en Chicago por primera vez justo a días después de que se reúna el congreso.

Durante los tres días del congreso, los participantes tendrán la oportunidad de asistir a sesiones de panel y talleres relacionados a los tres temas generales—justicia económica, inmigración/derechos migrantes y voto latino/participación cívica.
