Aquinas Literacy Center, which offers free tutoring in English to non-English speaking adults, will hold its annual Walk-a-thon on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in McKinley Park, 39th & Western in Chicago. Funds raised by the event will support the work of the not-for-profit Center, which serves McKinley Park and the surrounding communities of Chicago’s Southwest Side, an area with a large immigrant population.  The 5KAY walk (approximately 3 miles) honors the late Sister Kay Buechele, OP, a dedicated volunteer tutor and board member. Participants may download registration materials, and make a donation online at www.aquinasliteracycenter.org/donate.

Aquinas Literacy Center, located at 3540 S. Hermitage Ave., depends on trained volunteers and donations, and faces increased demand for its services. It has served more than 1,200 adult learners since it opened in 1996.

Continuing the educational commitment of the Adrian Dominican Sisters who taught at the now closed Aquinas High School in South Shore, the Aquinas Literacy Center provides an environment conducive to learning which respects each person and is intent on fostering independence learning, personal growth, and social responsibility.
