Talent and Chismes: Proyecto Latina Provides Multi-Media Platform for Artistic Expression

To give a bit of a rattle between poetry and readings, the women at Proyecto Latina write anonymous chismes (gossips) on a small piece of paper, throwing it inside the notorious Chisme Box where names go unmentioned and secrets are exposed.

“My secret fantasy would be for him to pop out of a cake in a rhinestone Speedo,” one of the participants reads, as a chorus of laughter rings through the crowd.

One-by-one audience members read a chisme while laughter fills the room, hinting for the next performer to take center stage and share with everyone her most recent written piece.

The tradition is a signature element of Proyecto Latina’s reading series—a project held every third Monday of the month, bringing a vast number of Latina writers, performers, artists and poets together since its inception in 2005. Here, women find a welcoming space to share their talent freely without fear of criticism.

The reading series, mostly held at coffee shops or art galleries in Pilsen or Little Village, has opened a platform to share and speak about just about any subject important to Latinas in today’s society.

Born through the necessity to highlight emerging and established Latina talent in the South Side, its founders Diana Pando, Irasema Gonzalez and Coya Paz, have since expanded the project online, creating a multi-media platform that gives Latinas a voice of their own.

From an open mic that gives participants an opportunity to read their written work aloud to a Reportera Series that reports on issues impacting Latinas both locally and nationally, Proyecto Latina has grown to be more than a monthly space to gather.

“You pick up the Sun-Times or the Tribune and chances are you won’t see Latinas in the arts,” said Pando. “There are a lot of amazing women in our communities, impacting our communities and we want to be able to let folks know about the great work they’re doing.”

Through their reading series and online presence, Proyecto Latina aims to create its own opportunity to fill existing gaps in mainstream media, encouraging women of all ages to share their work, no matter the caliber.

“The reading series has helped inspire women in different ways,” said Gonzalez. “Many of them say that once they are scheduled to feature with us, it’s like lighting a fire in them and there’s this pressure to create. It’s interesting that what they choose to share with us, they won’t share anywhere else and it’s because of the safe space that we aim to create.”

January’s reading series featured Paloma Martinez-Cruz, a longtime participant of Proyecto Latina who debuted her book Women and Knowledge in Mesoamerica: From East L.A. to Anahuac and spoke about the medicine traditions of Mesoamerican women. But the book wasn’t the only debut that night, as a young Latina, a freshman in high school, participated for the first time in the open mic and read her ode to Justin Bieber out loud to a packed room at Cobalt Studio.

“From what I’ve noticed our audience is multi generational, so we do get some young Latinas participating in open mic,” said Pando. “Whether they’re writers, artists or photographers, this gives them a platform to be able to showcase their work, tell their stories in primera voz and expose audiences to it.”

This year, being one of the Chicago Community Trust Local Reporting Award recipients and seeing an opportunity to expand their online presence, Pando and Gonzalez decided to add a Reportera Series, recruiting Latina writers to write in-depth articles about issues affecting their community.

“We are both bloggers,” said Gonzalez. “I have a journalism background and Diana has a marketing background and it was inevitable that this was going to happen. We saw this opportunity come up and we went for it.”

The Reportera pieces will be unveiled this month, featuring a variety of stories that they hope will work as resources for women in the Latino community.

But even with the growth of Proyecto Latina, both Pando and Gonzalez agree that they want to develop and refine what’s already in place, keeping the reading series in the South Side and continuing to provide a safe space to feature the vast talent of Latina artists in the area.

“Now in 2012 there is an abundance of the things that lacked when I was a young writer looking for these kind of spaces,” said Gonzalez. “The internet changed that a lot. Now you have blogs and the ability to self-publish. I have to always remind myself that it wasn’t always like this and I just feel so lucky that we are able to do something like that.”

Talento y Chismes: Proyecto Latina Brinda una Plataforma Multimedia para Expresión Ártistica

Para crear un poco de ajetreo entre poesía y lecturas, las mujeres de Proyecto Latina escriben chismes anónimos en un pequeño pedazo de papel, dejándolo dentro de la famosa Caja de Chismes donde los nombres no se mencionan y los secretos son expuestos.

“Mi fantasía secreta sería que él brincara de un pastel en un Speedo cubierto de piedras preciosas”, lee una de las participantes, mientras un coro de risa surge del público.

Uno a uno los miembros del público leen un chisme mientras que las risas llenan el lugar, dando a entender al siguiente artista que tome el escenario y comparta con todos su más reciente pieza escrita.

La tradición es un elemento particular de las series de lectura de Proyecto Latina—un proyecto que se realiza cada tercer lunes del mes, reuniendo a un vasto número de escritoras latinas, intérpretes, artistas y poetas desde su incepción en 2005. Aquí las mujeres encuentran un espacio acogedor para compartir su talento libremente sin el temor a ser criticadas.

Las series de lecturas, en su mayoría realizadas en cafés o galerías de arte en Pilsen o La Villita, han abierto una plataforma para compartir y hablar acerca de cualquier tema de importancia para las latinas de la sociedad actual.

Nacido a través de la necesidad de destacar el emergente y establecido talento de las latinas en el sur de la ciudad, sus fundadoras Diana Pando, Irasema González y Coya Paz, han desde entonces expandido el proyecto en línea, creando una plataforma multimedios que les da a las latinas su propia voz.

Desde un micrófono abierto que les da a las participantes la oportunidad de leer su trabajo escrito en voz alta hasta una serie Reportera que reporta sobre las cuestiones que afectan a las latinas tanto a nivel local como nacional, Proyecto Latina ha crecido para ser más que un especio mensual para reunirse.

“Agarras el Sun-Times o el Tribune y es probable que no veas a latinas en las artes”, dijo Pando. “Hay muchas mujeres asombrosas en nuestras comunidades, que impactan nuestras comunidades y queremos hacerle saber a la gente acerca del grandioso trabajo que hacen”.

A través de sus series de lectura y su presencia en línea, Proyecto Latina busca crear su propia oportunidad para llenar las existentes brechas en los principales medios, instando a las mujeres de todas las edades para que compartan su trabajo, sin importar el calibre.

“Las series de lectura han ayudado a inspirar a las mujeres en maneras distintas”, dijo González. “Muchas de ellas dicen que una vez que están programadas para presentarse con nosotros, es como si encendieran el fuego en ellas y hay esta presión para crear. Es interesante que lo que eligen compartir con nosotros, no lo comparten en ninguna otra parte y es por el espacio seguro que buscamos crear”.

La serie de lectura de enero presentó a Paloma Martínez-Cruz, una participante de mucho tiempo de Proyecto Latina que debutó su libro Mujeres y Conocimiento en Mesoamérica: Del Este de L.A. al Anáhuac y habló acerca de las tradiciones medicinales de las mujeres mesoamericanas. Pero el libro no fue el único debut de la noche, ya que una joven latina, estudiante de primer año de secundaria, participó por primera vez en el micrófono abierto y leyó su oda a Justin Bieber en voz alta a una sala repleta en el Estudio Cobalt.

“De lo que he observado, nuestro público es multi generacional, así que también tenemos a jóvenes latinas que participan en el micrófono abierto”, dijo Pando. “Ya sean escritoras, artistas o fotógrafas, esto les da una plataforma para poder exhibir su trabajo, contar sus historias en primera voz y exponerlas a las audiencias”.

Este año, siendo unas de las ganadoras del Premio al Reportaje Local del Chicago Community Trust y viendo una oportunidad para expandir su presencia en línea, Pando y González decidieron añadir una serie Reportera, reclutando a escritoras latinas para escribir artículos de profundidad sobre las cuestiones que afectan su comunidad.

“Ambas somos bloggers”, dijo González. “Tengo experiencia en el periodismo y Diana tiene experiencia en mercadeo y fue inevitable que esto iba a suceder. Vimos que se nos presentó esta oportunidad y decidimos tomarla”.

Las piezas de la serie Reportera serán reveladas este mes, presentando una variedad de historias que esperan funcionarán como recursos para las mujeres en la comunidad latina.

Pero incluso con el crecimiento de Proyecto Latina, tanto Pando como González están de acuerdo en que quieren desarrollar y refinar lo que ya está en su lugar, manteniendo las series de lecturas en el sur de la ciudad y continuar brindando un lugar seguro para presentar el vasto talento de las artistas latinas del área.

“Ahora en 2012 hay una abundancia de las cosas que faltaban cuando era una escritora joven buscando esta clase de lugares”, dijo González. “El internet ha cambiado mucho. Ahora tenemos los blogs y la habilidad de auto publicarnos. Siempre tengo que recordarme que no siempre fue así y me siento tan afortunada de que podemos hacer algo así”.
