Chicago Bears Hire Phil Emery as General Manager

After relieving Jerry Angelo of his duties last month, the Chicago Bears announced Phil Emery as their new general manager on Jan. 28, becoming the team’s fifth general manager in franchise history.

Emery, who joins the Bears after spending 14 seasons in the NFL, worked with the Kansas City Chiefs as director of college scouting for the past three years. He is familiar with the Bears, having worked as an area scout for the franchise from 1998-2004, according to ESPN.com.

The Bears interviewed several candidates before deciding on Emery, including New England’s Jason Licht and the New York Giants’ Marc Ross. Emery’s resume might have been a deciding point. During his time with the Atlanta Falcons, wide receiver Roddy White and quarterback Matt Ryan developed into Pro Bowlers, in 2005 and 2008, respectively.

Emery will take up several challenges as the Bears’ general manager, including contract negotiations with running back Matt Forte. As reported by ESPNChicago.com, Forte turned down a contract offer from the Bears before the season with $13 million to $14 million in guaranteed money.

It’s yet to be seen what the new general manager has planned for Forte, but Bears president and CEO Ted Phillips feels confident over his decision to hire Emery.

‘’What stood out with Phil was the depth of his plan,’’ Phillips said at a press conference on Jan. 30. “He had an added depth of understanding of what it would take on every level. That’s what really stood out.”
