White Sox to Fill Void After Buehrle’s Departure

Former White Sox Mark Buehrle will reunite with his former manager Ozzie Guillen in Miami as the Marlins agreed to sign the free agent, All-Star pitcher on Wednesday, Dec. 7.

According to an ESPN report, the Marlins reached a deal with Buehrle for $58 million over four years, subject to a physical.

Buehrle was a South Side fan favorite, as he was 13-9 with a 3.59 ERA this year and won his third straight Gold Glove. He also helped the team win the 2005 World Series and threw over 200 innings in each of the last 11 seasons with the White Sox.

It could take several years for the White Sox to recover the loss of Buehrle, according to reports, as the team is left with starting pitcher John Danks and Gavin Floyd, rotating Jake Peavy, Chris Sale, Philip Humber and Zach Stewart, leaving a hole bigger than when Guillen or Frank Thomas left the team.

But as the Marlins celebrated in Chicago’s loss of Buerhle, it also meant they lost out on St. Louis Cardinals free agent Albert Pujols, who, according to reports released on Thursday, Dec. 8, signed with a 10-year deal worth about $250 million with the Los Angeles Angels, which reportedly includes a full no-trade clause.

Both the Marlins and the Angels have been busy adding new players to their roster, as the Angels also signed C.J. Wilson on Thursday and the Marlins signed shortstop Jose Reyes and closer Heath Bell.

The new players have certainly added a dent to each team’s bank account. To give some perspective, Arte Moreno, owner of the Angels only paid $187 million for the team in 2003, a much lesser amount than he will pay Pujols over the next 10 years.
