The Warriors Running Group: Taking Over Pilsen and More

Members of The Warriors running group stand outside Los Chilaquiles restaurant on Sunday Dec. 11 before the start of their race.

It was Adriana Alvarez’s first time running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Having only ran and trained for two months, she was finding it difficult to think past her fatigue. But as she came across mile 16, ready to give up, she found an extra boost of energy from a pair of familiar faces— two members of her running group The Warriors, who were waiting to run the remaining miles right along with her.

“I was drained both emotionally and physically,” recounted Alvarez. “Seeing a familiar face, waiting and cheering me on, helped me cross that finish line.”

The camaraderie Alvarez’s groupmates demonstrated during the marathon is part of The Warriors support system, a running group designed to not only help its members achieve their fitness goals, but also apply a sense of social awareness by supporting local businesses and charities.

Initiated by Joseph N. Sobus almost a year ago, the running group offers free membership and works as a training program for those seeking to run anything from marathons to community runs.

“There are many running groups  that charge its members just to run without ever creating a real bond between them,” said Sobus. “It’s not like that with The Warriors. If we all run a race, we’ll wait until the last member crosses the finish line before we leave.”

The Pilsen-based running group meets at local businesses on Mondays and Wednesday nights before heading out to run together. Having the group meet at these businesses, according to Sobus, not only provides a space for members to hang out before and after the run, but also promotes and supports local businesses.

“We can make a difference in our communities just by showing up,” said Sobus. “There are many businesses that just started and by bringing together 30 or 40 people to them, they can make a profit.”

Along with Monday and Wednesday runs, the group also organizes races, tracking three to five mile-long routes along different neighborhoods, including Cicero where they held their last winter race on Sunday Dec. 11.

The group also organizes other events such as scavenger hunts, where members  run to different destinations in the city to find the answers to their clues.

“We run everywhere and can’t stop until we get all the answers right,” said Monica Briseño, a member of The Warriors. “It’s tiring, but I often discover parts of my neighborhood I’ve never seen before.”

Briseño was one of the members that joined Alvarez at mile 16 at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and helped her cross the finish line.

“I saw [Alvarez] was in pain so I kept encouraging her to keep going and not give up,” said Briseño. “I wanted her to achieve the goal she had set out for herself.”

The solidarity among group members also led The Warriors to become the first running team to represent Pilsen in the 2011 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. As a result, some of the member’s pictures showed up in promotional pamphlets, ads and even billboards around the city.

But despite any recognition The Warriors may gain, Sobus makes sure that the focus of the group remains on what brought them together in the first place—running.

“We want to create a fair atmosphere, where everyone is welcomed,” said Sobus. “It’s not about who is better, it’s about encouraging each other and achieving the goals we set out for ourselves.”

The Warriors next running season will begin in March. For more information about the running group and to find out how to join visit The Warriors Facebook page.

  1. It is a great feeling to be part of the change that is helping our local communities…The Warriors Running Group helps us stay healthy, stay in shape and also helping our local business. I believe Joe Sobus is a modern day hero, and The Warriors Running Group is providing hope to the people when it is most needed, Now!

Thanks for bringing good actions to light.

    Gerardo Tafolla

  2. We run too. Join us if you like.

We’ve been around for years. Congrats to the Warriors.

look us up on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/venadosrunning

  3. Matthew,

You are missing the point they do more than run and they are free. For all the things your group offers I would have to pay for..

  4. I went from running with the Warriors for 6 months. They are a all year round group but they also got me to run 1 mile to running 16 miles without a problem. They also run in Pilsen, are from Pilsen and making a difference.

  5. Finally a group gets it. This Sobus guy seems to get the idea that if it is about change who cares who gets the credit. This guys seem to get it. I also have to say that Matt. You and your team are like every other team if it is not you then you guys have to post you group in order to get free promotions. That is not classy.
I have never ran with the warriors but these guys are already headed for big things. Wow government could find a solutions and this team is doing it. Keep it up

    • A group that gets it? What does that mean? Government could not find solutions? But you did? To what? Crime? Obesity? Helping small businesses? I’m sure they don’t depend on your paternalistic handout to stay alive. I’m like wow! As for big things. I wish you the best, but talk about overstatement. A clear example here. Glad you guys are doing good, but curb your ego.

Doesn’t it cost money to eat at those restaurants? So it does cost money to participate.

  6. Sobus is such a great guy!! Yeah right! Check out his 2nd place win at the Dia de Los Muertos! At least the Venados had a real runner win a place!! They didn’t have someone else run for them! Sobus your a fake.

  7. Hey,

Kidding me and Robert…I’m just saying that there is more than one running group, and not one taking over Pilsen. Yes, I’m glad and I congratulate you for what you are doing.

But, from what I see on Facebook…the Warriors is a business…so what does that mean? Eventually, money is going to have to be made somehow. Making a difference…going to small businesses is good. Glad you’re doing it. We could learn from it.

Ehem, last time I checked running is free…but most running groups are not because it costs money to run things. Excuse the pun.

We are here and have been here. Don’t fear us, join us. Hey, if anything I think we can even do things together. Congrats again…

  8. I have been watching these guys every Wednesday. These guys start in front of simones on all their runs. Then they cheer their runner when they are coming back from their run. No matter how cold it is they will always wait until all the member return. I always want to join but I need to get in better shape.
I am proud that they are Latinos and what the article has to say this group is changing the community for the better faster than the the mayor.

    You guys keep it up

  9. First I would like to say thank you for the kind words. It is humbling that I am personally mentioned in the article however, this is a team effort. If I did not have all these amazing people backing our mission then it would no be able to make changes.

I am also lucky that I have people who remind me to walk away from things that is not about our mission for our community. If people are about true change then it doesn’t matter about who is creating the changes in our community as long as it benefit everyone.

Thank you for your kind words
    Joseph N Sobus

    • Yeah, it says 2nd place. But, I guess he didn’t…what do you say?

      MALE AGE GROUP: 25 – 29
Place O’All Name Age Time Town St
      ===== ===== ========================== === ========= ================== ==
      1 2 TODD QUEDNAU 29 15:58.9 CHICAGO IL
      2 4 JOSEPH SOBUS 28 16:41.7 CHICAGO IL

What’s your mission exactly? Go to businesses to find sponsors for your business? That’s some generosity.

  10. These guys are great. I see them helping out the community. Helping small businesses is important and I have read their page. They do not charge their members and find sponsorship for their runners.
They also state once a warriors always a warrior.
I did see your teams page and you charge for things they are giving for free. Matty stop hating. They is why you are made because these guys are doing something more than running.
I also have ran with groups and they are not all free. Most groups charge tons of money to join.

  11. I think it is sad that when one team or organization trying to do something for the community another team is trying to cut them down. The article does not share he winner he states winning is not important. Helping other reach their goals is important. Just sad that some people can’t get past their egos because it didn’t happen to them.

Just what we need more divisions in our community.

  12. Super sad..what is sad is that they buy all the b.s. from this guy. He did not get a second place, but his name is officially there. I wonder what else he’s cooking up.

No one is cutting them down. He can do a group if he wants. No one is stopping him, but don’t mask it as something else. I’m not a part of any group.

  13. Just have to say that this is not about divisions in the community. It’s about having an unstated mission driven by one guy’s ego. That’s not right, and neither is all the press and praise as if he’s some hero that’s rescued Pilsen’s small businesses. Really? People are not that naive. And what’s up with that phony finish? If you want glory and praise, and cash come out and say it. Don’t put some nice veneer on it.

  14. We can all tell you have something personal against a guy that is just trying help his community. I read the article twice and it doesn’t mention anything about him being an elite runner. Just offering help to a business. And then having people come together to have fun.

I just find it sad you guys are making it about yourself and not just looking at this group and others as an example to help out our community.

I also do not see the difference between a non for profit that raises money for their salaries and a business that helps small businesses and charities. In the article it doesn’t state he took any money to help out. If they were Target and gave ten percent of the profits to charity they would have the same story ran about them. Right?

I just think you guys should just say good job and try to make your own difference the way you see fit. If you don’t like it then maybe you should help out more.

  15. I have been a member in running groups and work out groups and have paid a lot for each group and all I got was a guide to follow. I could have printed that on the internet. The Warriors did not provide me with that, they provided a GROUP not just JOE SOBUS support, tips and more than anything friendship.

Even when I’m no longer interested in running I will be left with friends and an understanding on their mission. current and past members know what the mission is, if you are interested in finding out what the mission is? we invite you to join the group. If anyone has a problem with ONE member it doesn’t reflect the entire group.

Whether is a non for profit or a business, helping is the mission and whether is in pilsen, back of the yards, rogers park or any suburb, there’s room for everyone.

  16. I think that everyone posting is missing the point. The Warriors, as well as, The Venados are great groups. Groups that promote running and fitness, especially in the Latino community, are exemplary giving the obesity rates for Latinos. Clearly there are people that dislike the leader, Sobus. I think this guy means well, but is a total moran. He has completely discredited himself by cheating in the Dia de los Muertos race. How are you going to promote team spirit and fortitude with ideals like that? Yeez did the entire team cheat their times in the marathon as well? lol. My point is as follows, I truly feel sorry for those Warrior runners who truly like running and have found passion in the sport, because being associated with this guy is BAD NEWS. As far as making a change in the community thats great but don’t act like you’ve single handedly decreased the unemployment rate! HELLO! As far as paying for a group, what’s wrong with that. Nothing is free in life.

  17. Like I said before, I empathize with the Warriors, especially those like Carmen, that have found friendship and support. However, There is a stigma associated with this group because of the leader. This guys is a con artist, brags about things he hasn’t done, cheats and puts other running groups down. Had he handled his behavior in a more cordial manner, he may have taken the Warriors to a respectable level.

  18. Leandro Schultz 2nd place finisher

For everyone who is concerned about Joe running that race you need to all calm down. I ran for Joe that day. I was planning on running it on my own but registration was closed. So Joe, who had been hurt and wasn’t sure he could run it, gave me his bib #. To thank him I gave him the prize. If you don’t believe me google my name, I ran for Valparaiso University and am capable of running that fast. I work with his gf and thats where we got the idea.

So take it easy. Respect the man for doing something nice and starting a great running group. Calling him a sham is just plain disrespectful when you don’t know anything about situation.

  19. Why all the hate towards this guy? He starts a running group and gets people to join. They turn personal improvement into a social event and bring positive press to a community. They encourage everyone in the group to strive and be more than they began. They charge no money to join, they don’t restrict membership, and support restaurants and other businesses in the area. Do you have a running group that charges for membership? Did these guys come to your restaurant and trash the place? Do you have proof they cheated in the marathon? From the time the group’s leader ran, I would think he would have given himself a better time. Join them or start your own group. Make difference in your community!

  22. That is no the truth. I was there when all the members voted. He stated that this is an investment to ourselves. I was there when we asked people to help from the running group as a non profit. We all voted a group to go the other direction. I was present when we tried to talk to key members of the group to step up. They were either too busy, never returned Joe’s calls or told him do what he felt was best to get us funds to create our team shirts.

He also sent a invitation to members that were interested and the ones that attended. attended. It is said that the Truth feels that way because if you felt that way then you should have brought it up at the meetings like we always do.

Or you can start your own group and do it the way you want.

  23. Wow!! what a shame to see how something good can turn into something uglyso quick.
I’m a proud and active Warrior member and it’s so disrespectful to have someone who has never met the group have such a strong and naive opinion of The Warriors.

I see how hard Joe has work not only to keep the group together
but also to welcome new members to the group. What achievements is he
    claiming? no where in
the article is he claiming fame for himself, if you ask any of the members how many times he has claimed to be the fast in the group they will tell you “none” because The
Warriors are not praised on how fast we are, we are praised on completing our goals.

In regards to La Carrera De los Muerto, it was my idea. I didn’t think this was going to be such a big deal but
people hating on Joe is all they are focused on. Now that is sad!

  24. You know what this is? This is a simple case of the the status quo, the Venados, trying to keep competition out. They are acting as the 1% trying to maintain their grip on the running community. Stop hating and trying to hold down the groups that are actually doing something by bringing businesses to the struggling local establishments. Stop try to capitalize on the situation in order to boost your enrollment and collect more fees. Stop trying to hold down those that wish to rock your comfortable mind frame of exploitation

  25. To ThE TrUTH: you display your ignorance, first with accusations and innuendos which have no basis in fact. Secondly, the CAP/lo case is annoying as hell. Your upbringing and third grade education are very obvious. As for “the word in the hood”, don’t put it out and it won’t be there. Most people don’t respect someone that brings another person down to feel better about themselves. Grow up, grow a pair, then go out and do something good for your family, your community, etc. I am certain there is plenty of need to go around, and if you succeed, you too can have your 15 minutes of fame. However, I just don’t believe you have it in you. If you have trouble understanding mu post, let me know and I will rephrase it in monosylabic words.

  26. Leandro…Seriously how much did you get paid now to divulge that minor detail!! LOL. The Truth….I heard the rumors as well. Sobus was bragging about getting second place all over the place. You people are hystereical. HE GOT CAUGHT LOL!! So of course he has to explain!! HELLO!

Roomano… There is not hate. On the contrary if you refer to my previous post I am highlighting the wonderful benefits that running can bring to the Latino Community. I support the Warriors. They are a great group and have plenty of potential. They have great ideas and I like that they attempt to give back to the community by supporting local businesses. They just need to lose Sobus. The guy is BAD NEWS! Put someone else in charge and watch the group flourish. I’m sorry that this guy has you fooled.

  27. Leandro Schultz 2nd place finisher

What do you mean he got caught? I didn’t think anybody would care that he didn’t run the race and gave his bib to someone else. You act like this is some dynasty gang backdoor corrupt deals going on here. The man let me run for him. THAT’S IT. It’s running people, not trying to topple over dynasties.

If you love the Warriors so much, wouldn’t you think Joe is doing a great job considering he’s leading the group. That’s like saying you like the Bulls, but you hate Derrick Rose for being good and leading the team.

  28. Leandro helped the scam

Follow the leader. And he’s a vain sham!

As his ideas go, so goes the group. Why have someone run with your bib, even if you’re hurt? That makes no sense, unless you want prizes and praise. Think about it. Why would anyone have someone do that? It’s not the runners name that will be on the records, but the one who registered. Funny, how he got that Leandro guy to come and back him up now.

As he said, this group GETS IT. Whatever that means. It’s clearly a put down because other groups don’t.

“The Warriors are better and special because I’ve led them.” I’m sure he thinks that.

I guess by getting it he means the attention and popularity that came from the corporation that’s taken over the marathon — Bank of America.

Maybe others have charged or charge as the Venados do because things do cost money. Hey, as someone points out they’re both doing good in the community.

But, since when are the Sobus Warriors the only team in town? Ever since he started making claims that they were the first Latino group from Pilsen to run in the marathon, ever since he got his group to think like him. That Matthew guy just mentioned the Venados and people — Sobus and company — jump all over him. I know people from both and people from the Venados help in their churches, at their schools and other organizations in the community. NO HANDOUTS OR CHARITY TO MAKE THEMSELVES LOOK AND FEEL GOOD, IT’S JUST WORK ON THE GROUND MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE. They just don’t make such a big deal about it.

Remember everyone, the Sobus Warriors Facebook page says they are a business. I wonder where the money will come from? You gonna take a cut from sponsors for yourself? Hey that’s what others do. Don’t get sanctimonious on us by showing and saying how big a difference you’re making. Others do more and don’t advertise it.

Good luck to ALL Latino running groups.

  29. What a Sham & The Truth, if you have such a strong opinion why not put your real names. Why hide under nicknames? This is childish and totally missing the point to the big picture.

  30. To The Truth: Dude, I don’t run, don’t live in Pilsen, and am not fooled as I have nothing to gain. I came across this story quite by accident and found it quite intriguing until I saw your and a couple of other posts. You obviously don’t know this person very well to express all this jealousy on a public forum. He must be a master at manipulating people and if that is the case, I forsee a career in politics for him. I read the article, and don’t see a fortune to be made by this guy by checking out a few local venues. It, however creates a great deal of good will in a time when people reaching out to others is indeed a rare event. What will he gain? A donation of a few shirts for the group in the next marathon in return for a credit? You, sir, are the one who is displaying a lack of tact and leadership by posting negative personal opinions. What next? Will you attack Santa?

  31. I think that Mr. Sobus screwed himself over when he started claiming accomplishments he never had. First by claiming that the Warriors were the first Latino running group in Pilsen, when he knew about the Venados. I think both groups could co-exist and even do good things for the community. Matt pointed that out in a previous post. My outsiders perspective is that he felt intimidated by them. He should have been a bit more humble in his dealings. Cheating at the race was all to put the “Warriors” on the map since they can’t do it on their own hard work. Then to brag about it and turn around and say it was his girlfriend’s idea. Ha!! What a bad boyfiend. I’m not a Venados member but I’m actually comtemplating becoming one. They have shown more humility and respect then he has.

To clarify when I say Warriors, I’m just referring to Sobus and his fan club. There are actually people in the group that are being misrepresented.

  32. From what I’ve seen, the Warriors are an awesome group of people and they have done great things for the community. A lot of their stories inspire me. However, I also question the current motives of the group. One of the main things they focus on is raising money for various charities. It looks like several members were able to raise good amounts of money which should be praised. However, I wonder how much Joe Sobus PERSONALLY raised for a charity in 2011. Did he have a charity that he ran for? That’s a great question. Doesn’t need to be answered. Actions speak louder than words and you lead by example.

  33. Leandro..

Topple Dynasties??? What are you studying in college? World History!
I never professed love for Sobus simply a dislike for his unorthodox and deceiving ways of conducting business. He has quite a rap sheet from what I hear. I just dislike the fact that he can sucker people like you to clean up his messes.

So since both of you lied at the Dia de los Muertos race I imagine you have returned the award?? You just came out and admitted that you ran it so clearly that disqualifies both of you. The honorable thing to do would be to return the award and inform the race coordinators of your deception. That might gain the Warriors some respect.

Veronica…Why would I give a thief my address??? LOL. Are you guys a gang now?

I really do love the Pilsen community though. Great Article.

  34. Clearly that would be the honorable thing to do. Return the prize and tell the organizers to remove your name from their records.

I guess he doesn’t get that — the truth or humility.

Yeah, he’s the problem. Just because your group is doing good, doesn’t man you have to put others down. Matt actually reached out. Maybe it was not classy to put their info here, but he didn’t slam you. That came by others later after you made all these crazy claims about doing what government could not do. Now you’re more powerful that Obama, Emanuel and Daley put together.

Get off your ego trip. Pilsen was doing fine before you came along — ever heard of the National Museum of Mexican Art or Mujeres Latinas en Acción or Pilsen Neighbors?

    Ruben

  35. Leandro Schultz 2nd place finisher

I know this is a crazy concept, but runners let other runners use their bibs all the time!! It’s the great part of the running community. People helping other people.

Sorry if I took away your chance to win a skull? were you even close? I might’ve seen you on the lap through.

The topple dyansties is supposed to mean your taking this way out of proportion. All he did was give me his bib #, next time I’ll beat you under my name if that makes you feel better.

  36. Who comments on an article this much ? seriously ? People like ThE TrUTH who wastes all that time to type out LiKe ThIs ? What are you 11 ? Get a hobby you DB’s , LEAVE the man alone. Sabus is a good dude and no one messes with Leandro – Mix it up!!

  37. I actually ran for TODD QUEDNAU – My real name is Shane “Money’ Reese. Todd told me I was better and paid me $3.86 to run. I owned it , and right now Im chilling with my 1st place prize and a warm Busch light – How ya like me now ????

  38. Leandro -You cut a pretty good time kiddo don’t think I can beat you!!

However, if I was desperate like Sobus I could always just pay you to wear my bib and that way I can get credit for your time and get the skull. LOL.

Great Question- Awesome question!! I don’t think Sobus even knows how to spell fundraiser! He has his slaves do all the work while he sits back and basks on their glory.

The 99- Seriously? “Bring business to the struggling local establishments”.. WoW are you guys dropping that much money that your actually helping the economy thrive in Pilsen? It’s nice that you guys meet in local establishments but don’t give yourselves that much credit. I would respect your comment more if you helped build schools, create shelters for homeless people and feed the hungry. But spending 99 cents on a cup coffee is not going to turn Pilsen into the Gold Coast. Just putting in my 2cents… no pun intended.

  39. man, this is too funny – I personally know someone with the warriors and she worked hard for a charitable cause and to make a difference for herself , her friends, and her community. Then you have all of these clowns attacking what a running group does as a scam because someone filled in on a race and got a glass skull ? Really >? Where do your priorities lie when your facts are based on “Word around the hood ” and ” I heard around the streets” ? To attack a man’s credentials and dignity because someone filled in on a CHARITY race because the guy was hurt is just low. I also know Leandro , and the kid just likes to run – so the chance came up to run and he ran , he didn’t even care about the prize or the 2nd place , just that he got to run. Pick and choose your battles – It’s RUNNING – not politics , or warfare.

  40. Leandro Schultz 2nd place finisher

Then give me your bib # lol. The point is he wasn’t desperate to win a skull. I didn’t even know how good the race would be. He just gave me his # and to thank him I gave him the skull. That’s it. He wasn’t trying to be sneaky or misleading, that needs to be dropped. This is all in regards to the race.

  41. Ok, so you do that and we didn’t know about it. Yeah, I can’t run as fast as you, probably never will, but I don’t have to. Talk about egos. But, I can run and I can observe things. I run for myself and for charity.

Still, this doesn’t change this guys ego.

Good luck. I’m sure you have many great people, but with him running it — watch out! Egoists have to control things and people. Watch out if he’s not happy. After all, it’s his group. Someone called it Sobus Warriors — that’s right. It’s him directing the group and staining everyone. He slammed the Venados long ago and did it again here.

People, some comments are right. This is a good group of people, but you don’t have to depend on them. You can and should start your own running group or join some fine ones that run for church charity groups or others charities. I’m sure you’ll find great support and friends there too. Contrary to his belief, others get it too and are doing good things.

  42. I started running with the group in February 2011 before it was officially The Warriors. It was just a handful of us running for fun in the middle of the winter! At that time we were small and we didn’t know that we would become a real running group but we ran regardless, mostly because we enjoyed it and it was a great time! But now we have members from all walks of life. I think what truly makes our group special is our members. From the very beginning we created a culture of support and camaraderie. Although what unites us is our love for running – what has kept us together and growing is our support of one another and the friendships we’ve been able to cultivate.

Similarly, by being intentional about supporting our local businesses and various community initiatives and fundraisers we are showing that we support important causes and that we can make a difference. We developed this tradition back when the group was formed; to support each other by attending each others fundraisers and community events. This way we not donate to a good cause but we are promoting unity and camaraderie among each other. All of the social events come second and we also use this as a way to celebrate our many accomplishments. We have many team members in the group who have run the Chicago Marathon for the very first time; that is quite an accomplishment and we like to do our best to recognize that. The high-fiving and waiting for everyone at the end of each run (that someone mentioned) is just one of the small things we do to show our support and appreciation towards each other. Overall, I think that the reason most of us run with the Warriors is not for fame (although that is nice :) or recognition but because of the wonderful team spirit and culture we’ve been able to form and make for ourselves. Personally, I am grateful for all the great people I have met here and what we have been able to accomplish. At the end of the day, that is what is most important!

I am happy that The Gate has come out to cover this great story and that you have given light to our cause, thank you, it is truly appreciated!

    Cristina Garcia

  43. Hi,

Cristina, thanks for that. I’m glad you met good people and that he’s not the center of this, but he sure loves the fame! You might not, but he’s running the show. Keep that in mind.

And, it’s not like only the Sobus Warriors do this or are somehow superior or better than anyone. Why slam other groups?

More power to you guys for all the good things you do.

    Ruben

  44. It was brought to our attention that someone has been misrepresenting our club and has posted comments on this thread on our behalf. We would like to clarify that our members do NOT and will NOT participate in these types of back-and-forth activities and we regret the fact that someone took it upon themselves to pose as a Venados Running Club member. We do not have anything against the Warriors, or any other running group for that matter. Our goal and our mission is solely to promote the sport of running and to encourage our members to meet their fitness goals. We simply run and are active in the running community – we do not have any other political or social agenda, nor are we trying to claim that one group is better than any other. We are in no part affiliated with the Warriors and do not want to receive any of the backlash from their media exposure, therefore this is our first and only post on any Warrior-related press. We would like to congratulate them on their successes and as always encourage ALL runners to KEEP MOVING!

    Enrique Rivera
    The Venados Running Club

  45. I ran my first marathon this year in a respectable time. The Warriors have been a great bunch of friends. I thank them and Joe for their support. Without them I would not have achieved my goals.

    Salvador
    Warrior

  46. I have ran with the warriors for a month now. I will have to say I have joined many running groups but none like them. This group has something about it. You can tell they always think about their members first. I have talk to Joe and I understand his vision angst can’t wait to see it next season come alive. It is just a shame that in our community there are so many people hating on one person who given people the opportunity to be and do better.
    Thank you warriors
    Karen

  47. I have ran with the warriors all season. These guys have helped me change my life around. I would just go out drink and do nothing. But then I went to a run they were the best thing that happened to me.
As for all the comments about one person it is sad that jealously would have people act this way. This is the question you should ask yourself. Did he create something better than was there before? The answer is yes.
I know Sobus and he always treats people with respect.
    Good job Joe and warriors

  48. Great article.
It is nice to see such great people coming together to create real change in the neighborhood. I am proud of the Warriors and am sadden that when one person decided to make a great group people do what comes normal. Tear this person down then have try to make it look like they were not the ones doing it. I hope that you guys continue with your mission and I have already reached out to the Warriors and made please to go to the tribal meeting this week.
    thanks
    N.V

  49. I think our community should be proud and ashamed. There is a group out there that is making a difference and there is a group just talking a whole lot of nothing. My advice to the warriors keep up the great work and to the other group stop hating and trying to ride the coat tails of other success.

  50. I read this article a few days ago, participated in this run along w/a handful of other runs earlier on this year. It was a beautifully written article and spoke the truth about the group in general…and then i saw some of these comments. It is almost amusing but probably the childish thing I’ve seen in my adult life. I can’t believe someone is so bothered and affected by one person, and then has to hide behind a virtual source to express how they really feel. It’s cowardly and childish…and so petty! i wonder if the person was crying of anger when they wrote these comments. I wasn’t going to write anything but I find it to be a beautiful thing to call it how it is. If I’m not mistaken, only a guy would have this kind of anger and jealousy toward another guy..because let’s face it, a girl just wouldn’t care about things like this. Only a guy w/a hurt ego would; but then I’m torn to think this because only a girl would treat this article as a tmz/perez hilton type of article & act like this is kindergarten all over again…because it is that petty, pointless and catty.

As for the guy that wrote that it costs to eat… you’re not forced to eat after the runs nor are you forced to pay for joe’s meal or others. You gotta eat and it’s a choice, but if you want to be cheap and don’t have the $6 to eat a nice meal w/good company, then go home and eat your mom’s home cooked meal or you can starve. That one really made me laugh! I highly doubt that the person questioning if the group is helping to build schools etc. is doing that himself. but cutting and pasting the run’s times and asking to give the skull back…a skull!… that one made me shake my head. i mean, taking the time and going so out of your way to do that, wow. Last but not least, learn the difference between “your and you’re”..that goes out to a couple of you! All i can say is: grow up and grow some. little girls.

  51. I was actually not going to comment on this article because the responses are definitely beyond the actual content of the article, but after reading the rest of the comments, I felt compelled to continue the merriment. I think the great thing about living in a democracy is the freedom of speech and expression. This is why I choose to express mine accordingly. While I vehemently disagree with the perception that you “zombies”(current Warrior members) have of this individual (Sobus), I must also respect your opinion. Clearly, you must have positive experiences with him and that is totally fine. That he is trying to do something positive for the community, I’ll give you that. Although he will find a way to reap a benefit from it. I’m sure he has helped many non-runners find faith and excitement in running. However, it’s the way he handles himself in public and with others that has given him such a bad name in the community. He is not a humble person. He puts many people down, cheats and brags about things he is not even close in accomplishing. Honestly, you are the only people that like him. LOL. Like I said that’s fine. Given that naturally you are going to stick up for him. This article highlighting the group is fine. The problem is that Sobus is a sleazy, cheating and deceptive person. The reporter didn’t get the real story. There were many gross exaggerations and credit given to Sobus that he didn’t earn. Not even Sobus can keep up with his own lies. He ranted on and on how his group had no agenda, now they are becoming a business. He ranted on and on that is was going to be non for profit, now that is changing. He got you “zombies” to stick up for him and make all these positive comments about him because he is losing credibility and feels desperate. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was planned in the last Warrior meeting. How to clean up Joe’s persona.
As for jealousy? Jealous of what? He is done nothing but get an article published on a local newspaper. He hasn’t won the Nobel peace prize or anything of the sort.
Veronica you must be a total dimwit. It’s not about the skull, it’s the principal. The guy cheated. You’re in a group that is represented by a cheater. Why would you want to be associated with that? All you zombies are trying to sugar coat his deceptive tactics at the Carrera de los muertos. I refuse to believe you guys are that naive. The entire point about running is reaping the benefits of your hard training. That’s not what he is representing.
P.S. Veronica …word of advice perhaps you should proofread your post before you start pointing out grammatical grammars in others. Your post is riddled with errors. Also, why are you so adamant about knowing who is expressing their freedom to disagree with you and others? Are you planning on having them arrested, accosted or threatened? You guys sound more like a gang than the philanthropic organization you claim to represent. Clean up your attitude. That might help you guys gain a better image.

  52. *grammatical errors**

  53. What a wonderful article. What a shame that the people on this thread feel the need to be so hate filled. Why we’re even moving away from the great accomplishments that the Warriors have set in place is beyond me. The running group is young (in essence) and already moving with vast speed and gaining the necessary strength to progress as a group and as a people. Even if money and finances get involved, WHO CARES? As a member, I would be willing to do my part and my share by contributing monthly dues. I am not sure I understand the conundrum as it relates to finances. While it may be that we as a group are not motivated by money, I would not object to making a donation for the greater good; be it charity or other. WE ARE ALL YOUNG PROFESSIONALS, active in our community, and driven by the same cause—the bettering of our people be it white, black, latino, whatever. We should aim to leave these petty arguments behind. Your hate filled rants and criticisms are not necessary, and to hide behind the first amendment is a cop out. As far as mention of the other running groups, a pat on the back for you-I applaud anyone’s efforts to get people motivated, healthy, and active. In the same manner, I would hope that you would also applaud the WARRIORS-we are a force to be reckoned with, and our activism will only continue to grow, and rest assured our impact will be noted. Sit back, take a break, and watch us run passed you…

Don’t judge me until you know me. Don’t underestimate me until you challenge me. And don’t talk about me until you talk to me!

  54. I served in the army for 6 years. I take major offense that you would call me a zombie. Not only is it obvious that you are jealous that no one sees you as a leader and not smart enough to figure out a way to fix your community besides following the machine. I have spoken to Sobus and see that what makes him a great person is he doesn’t fall in line. Plus people in the group are leaders from the community.
I am proud to be a warrior, proud to have met sobus, proud to be not the same as everyone else.
Also he didn’t cheat the skull was given to him by the winner. Plus you know how the saying goes about small people talk about other while great men do what you are not doing.
    Peace

  55. The difference between perseverance and obstinacy is that one comes from a strong will, and the other from a strong won’t.  ~Henry Ward Beecher.

Joe, keep doing what you’re doing. Refrain from those who are not willing to see beyond what The Warriors are about. People make mistakes, obviously you have offended people in the past
and that is something you will have to face head on. Those people will be your worst critics and it’s up to you to prove yourself.

For those calling the Warrior members slaves/zombies it’s obvious you have not spend time with the group,
the warrior members are driven individual who are looking
to achieve a personal goal, some of the members are community leaders / army vets / business owners.
What shocks me the most is how well informed you guys are on what The Warriors plans are.
I would suggest for you to attend one the meeting since the meeting are open to active and new members this
will eliminate the middle man going back and forth. Remember a lot of information is lost in transaction or just
misscommunicated. You will see there are no hidden agendas / meeting are not to clean up Sobus’s persona (LOL) but they are of more importance like how to help our communities and
local business but most importantly eachother. All ideas are welcome.

  56. I’d love for you to point out my ‘grammatical grammars’. Name calling just goes to show how childish and petty you are… But since you went there; where I come from, you’d be called a vieja chismosa y amargada. I’m not a Warrior, I said I participated in a few runs with them. In no time did ‘defend’ Joe either, I think he’s a grown man that can do that for himself. The fact that you keep coming back to try to prove your point goes to show how Jealous and petty you are.
As far as the gang comment..arrested?? accosted?! LMAO! i simply pointed out that all the points being made are PETTY. ( I love that word for you) I’m sorry that you felt threatened..not only are you a vieja chismosa but you’re also a vieja arguendera. The only one that needs to change their attitude is you. What is it to you if someone else ran for him? If Joe and the Warriors are not affecting your daily life.. I suggest you mind your business, stop being annoyed and get a life. Try running!!! It relieves a lot of stress :)

“”If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.”

  57. Wow! Outstanding!!! Congratulations to Miss Adriana Alvarez and everyone else who ran 26.2. I ran my first marathon on 10-10-10, and I know that is takes hard work and dedication to get past that finish line. I know that it takes much effort & committment to be a part of a running group. Godwillingly, I will one day meet and join the Warriors for a fun run. As intimidating as the name “Warriors” sounds, I really love the fact that they all are or have become a good group of supportive friends. Furthermore, that the Warriors have a fantastic camaraderie. I run races with friends and also trained in a charity running group. One thing I must sadly admit is that after the race or training run everyone goes their own way. Aside from being free (I love free) it is great that running is made to be fun with scavenger hunts and the priceless friendships made along the way.
    God Bless the Warriors,
    MM

  58. I read the article and I must say that I have seen these guys running through the neighborhood.
    I am proud of them.
They are actually bring people together from all over the city. But I noticed that this other group looks bad by them posting all these negative ads and comments. so out of fair mind I looked them up.
The other group doesn’t even run in Pilsen they start in the South Loop.
Then after the Warriors posted the emails that were sent to them by that group. You see that the Warriors offered to invite them to run with them in order to bring people together.
The other group then started to write from their offical email and said no that they can join them and they have their own group. It was pretty lame.
All I have to say it that the Warriors did a great job bring people together and posting those emails showed how classy they are.
    wow great job!

  59. I have ran with this group for 2 weeks. they are a great group of people and I have paid other groups and I have learned more from the Warriors!! Plus it is free! I am telling people about them and I suggest it is a great group to join.

    Go Warriors!!

  60. Crap. How much did Joe Sobus pay you all? If the group is so wonderful why have so many warriors parted?
Everyone there now are new recruits. Furthermore the board is composed of nothing but women with little to no running experience. Give me a break.

  61. I Agree with Annoyed

I agree with Annoyed’s comments from December 20th. It appears most of the people on this thread haven’t been around the Warriors very long and are not informed. Based on looking at pictures and other information, pretty much all of the original members (with the exception of Joe’s inner circle) of the Warriors have departed. I wonder why that is? Maybe that would be a good question to ask one of the originals. In the end, Mr. Sobus is fine and dandy when you are a follower. Once you start asking Mr. Sobus serious questions, especially about his training program, he will turn on you because he is a control freak. He doesn’t even like to disclose the amount of miles the team is running. I’ve never heard of any other running groups practicing this. Why? Because that can lead to injuries. It’s careless.

As far as the UNO Carrera de los Muertos goes, he did cheat plain and simple. He can use any excuse he wants. “The winner gave me the skull”. “I was injured and that’s why the winner used my bib.” “My girlfriend wanted the skull”. He wasn’t injured enough to skip the race so he had no excuse to give the winner his bib. He knew what he was doing or at least he thought he did. What is even funnier is that looking at Mr. Sobus’s running history, he rarely registers for any races. AND FOR ONE OF THE FEW RACES he ACTUALLY registered for, he GIVES HIS BIB to SOMEONE ELSE. That makes a WHOLE LOT OF SENSE. The people who truly matter know the truth. I would think even the UNO-Carrera de los Muertos people know. Why I assume this? Even with all the positive noise the Warriors have made, even with all the exposure the group received for the marathon campaign in which Pilsen was highlighted, UNO decided to go to another Pilsen running group to run their 2012 marathon training program. I wonder why that is? All these things just don’t add up. And like Annoyed said on December 20th, the entire point about running is reaping the benefits of your hard training. Mr. Sobus didn’t set that example for the Day of the Dead race.

  62. Nuff Said for sure!

Yeah nuff said, pretty much all those runners are new. The magic of social media. We’ll see how many are left in August and September. As others have stated, what happened to a lot of the original Warrior members? And it looks like the Carrera de los Muertos cheaters (Real Sobus and Fake Sobus) are teaming up now. Great way to set an example to other runners. So nuff said right there. What a joke.

  63. Nuff Said Part 2

Carrera de los Muertos. Look for Bib 1824. Is that Sobus…or is it? Maybe there are 2 Joseph Sobus? Nah, I don’t think so.

  64. someone is a Stalker LOL

I think E.O. has a little unhealthy obsession with Mr. Sobus. Actually it’s pretty sad because all he wants to do is talk about Mr. Sobus and how evil a person he is because he gave away a bib. hahaha Would like to minimize all the achievements that his group has accomplished and has done under his leadership. One might ask a couple questions. I am one of the originals that has ran with this group since the beginning.

1.Why is he so obsessive about Mr. Sobus?

2.Why does he stick a newspaper article that has to do with Mr. Sobus?

3.Why is he so threatened by their success?

4.Why does he give himself so much importance on being one of the originals?

The real reason, why is he so obsessed would Mr. Sobus is because he wishes he could be him. Now of course he’s going to say why would I like to be a cheater or a person of low moral character. But you know the old saying when they talk about others they’re really talking about themselves.

He stalks the newspaper article because it’s the only thing that validates him as a person. he knows that the more he talks about Mr. Sobus and the Warriors he will always be important in his mind and in his eyes. this person should really pay more attention to their family, friends, and trying to find a more fulfilling purpose in life other than stalking Mr. Sobus.

The reason he’s so scared of their success is because the more successful the Warriors and Mr. Sobus becomes he has to live every day with the understanding that their success is not his success. So sad..

He talks about being one of the “originals” but if you look closely there were plenty of people who were in the group originally. He just lacks an understanding that people come people go people have more important things to do.

now looking back I think we all should feel sorry for this person because ultimately this is a person who may not have lost their family, hate their job and wish they could be or create something is great as The Warriors Running Group

  65. It's about running

Glad there are so many new runners out there. The Warriors have started with all new members. I think that’s great Mr. Sobus and his new group can learn much from many of the seasoned runners currently running in Pilsen.

BTW, bringing in the guy that ran your Bib doesn’t erase the fact that you cheated and shouldn’t be something to poke fun at. If anything it makes you look more like a jackass.. Joe get some common sense. If you really want this group to stay together avoid using unorthodox tactics. Also, be a role model by actually running for a charity instead of making the entiire group do it for you. See you guys on the running path.

  66. Funny how mostly everyone featured in this article no longer runs with the warriors.

  67. I am new to running and a friend of mine told me about your group, the warriors. I didn’t know anything about you guys but honestly after checking out your website and reading these comments I am completely turned off by your group! If these types of articles are being written about you guys, obviously the majority of the readers and people who comment are going to be actual members or friends of members. If this is how you all act, this is not the group for me! Even if half of these comments are false, the fact that there is all this DRAMA surrounding the group and especially the leader of the group is a bad sign, which makes me think that a lot of these comments are probably true! I also took a look at your fb page and almost attended one of your runs, however I don’t understand how you don’t tell people the distance that you’re going to run or that I’m not allowed to bring water??? I’m not an expert, but if I’m trying to train for the shamrock shuffle I’d imagine that I need to slowly build up to the distance or at least know the amount of time I’m running so I can plan my runs accordingly. And no water?! I’m sorry but I have not found one source that says NOT to drink water. For these reasons I think I am better off looking into other more reputable running groups that at least sound like they know what they’re doing and don’t act like they’re in grade school! I just thought I’d comment to let you guys know what kind of impression you leave to those that know nothing about you or dont know that much about running either…but i guess i know enough to run in the other direction though!

  68. I agree with turned off. I have never ran nor belonged to a running group. I am an avid runner and have been running for many years. I was a friend of Joe Sobus at one point and know how impulsive he can be. Even so, I was hugely disgusted and dissapointed when I found out he cheated at El dia de los Muertos Race. I never thought he would stoop that low. Now I read here that he is poking fun at cheating. Boy o boy. I can say having witnessed it he is a control freak and if you disagree with him or don’t follow his suggestions he will oust you from his group of friends and runners. Since many of my friends know im a runner they have asked me if I belong to the Warriors or know anything about them. Having heard from ex members and current warriors about the shenanigans that go on, I would not reccomend this group. Not only do they not have an actual/consistent training program, most members are not told about proper shoes, and mileage is often increased to quickly without any strategy. Many Warriors suffered injuries due to this last season. Joe himself is new to running therefore lacks the knowledge to effectively lead a group. So when people ask if they should run with the Warriors, my response is “yes, if I want to run myself into an early knee replacement.” (LOL). That’s my perspective. Still I tell my friends to check it out, but I dont endorse them. Who knows maybe they will enjoy running with them. Either way its a new training season and maybe Mr. Sobus has learned from his past mistakes and has devised an effective training program for his new batch of runners.

  69. Interesting...

I wonder why people are so hung up on race of the dead and Joseph Sobus? when the article is intended to
motivate people to accomplish a fitness goal.
Most of these blogs have nothing to do with the article.

Reading this, leads me to wonder if Joseph leadership the problem or if the problem was the members who left? If Mr. Sobus is such a bad leader, why has the group grown so fast? From what I know, the people who ran the marathon last year, not only finished but were injury free. Lest face it, people writting negative about the warriors are just mad at one person and the truth is, it has nothing to do with running. That’s the sad part.

  70. The Warriors Running Group invites you to join us to celebrate our 1st year Anniversary! It will be full of excitement and memories!

    http://www.facebook.com/events/146799588779495/

  71. I rode the LATE NIGHT BIKE RIDE with these guys and I have never seen such a large group that is so supportive!

If you don’t believe me just check out this video! It is crazy how cool this group really is and there is nothing like them in the south side of Chicago! Go Warriors!!

  72. I been running with the Warriors for two months. I have never had the results like this even while training with other running groups. Mr. Sobus and his team must know what they are doing because I have met several elite runner while training with them. Please it’s all for FREE! This team is soooooo supportive! No one cares about times, or who is beating who. They care about each member making their goals!

On one run that I was at 70+ people showed up and everyone greeted each other! I was new to the group but they welcomed me to the “tribe”. LOL

If anyone out there is looking for a fun group that is making a real difference in the community then you must join The Warriors Running Group! These guys are just great!

  73. I have started running with the Warriors Running Group since March! I am also a veteran. After reading these post and meeting Joseph Sobus I must say this guy knows how to train! His club has brought more elite runners to help train his members for free. What is not to like about that? He also was smart enough to create a board full of strong women! And when I say strong I have seen first hand Sobus listening to their advice and making changes when needed. He has also used the group to help local businesses stay open and help others vets raise money when their officials would help them out.

This guys is not only showing people who to make positive changes in the community but I have seen him out run some of the elite runners. That is crazy.
It is this guys option, who served in the war twice that Sobus is a strong leader and a MAN of character!

  74. Converted Warrior Runner!

Before joining the warriors I have ran with many different running group. not to mention any names if there were some larger organizations used along with that did not have the same feeling of friendship even after paying $300 for four weeks.

Sadly, I have heard many people and groups badmouth The Warriors Running Group. Some of the individuals I know personally and it’s only sad that instead of graduating them they act more like crabs in a bucket. Not only have I shaved off 15 minutes for my last half marathon I never thought I’d be training with the best in the Latino learning community for the expensive price of Free!!

Out personally like to say thank you to Joseph Sobus for creating The Warriors! not only is he making a difference in the community, saving local businesses will most importantly bringing people together to enhance their lives. Kudos and Keep pushing towards your goals! We all can’t wait to see how far you will go with this group.

  75. The first time I joined the Warriors I went alone but I was immediately greeted by friendly smiles who made me feel welcomed. I started talking to other warriors as if I knew them for years!!!

As I started to run my first 5 miles with the Warriors I had no idea Joseph was paying attention to the way we were running. During my run he saw I almost twisted my ankle on uneven pavement for playing around with my iPhone. Joseph came out of nowhere from behind, tapped me on the back and said “Keep your head up to see what’s coming up in front of you.” Later on he told me to control my breathing & showed me how to catch my breath. He would often check up on me & others by giving me the thumbs up & would reply with another thump up. My running partner that day was also looking out for me by telling me to “slow down a bit”… “watch out for that bump” or “Go faster your falling behind”. My partner was not only helping me but motivating me during my run. After running to the top of a hill somewhere in Bridgeport sure enough I fell behind. I was trying to keep up in a pace that was faster than mine no wonder my breathing was out of order.

I ran alone for the next few blocks until I met up with another group of warriors where I met Veronica Juana Diaz, the leader of the group. Veronica and I immediately clicked…her sparkling spirit was full of cheerfulness and enthusiasm. As we ran back together she kept inspiring me & the rest of the ladies by telling us what an awesome job we were all doing. We all finished the challenging course together and it felt GREAT!!!

After I completed my first 5 miles with the warriors I went up to Joseph and thanked him for creating this wonderful group who meet religiously, who have so much passion, & who are extremely friendly (tears where almost coming out of my eyes but I held them in) and on top of that membership is FREE. Unlike other groups which charge you hundreds of dollars to train with them. I told Joseph that it felt great to be part of a group with the same passion. Although I have the wonderful support of my husband and family they don’t fully understand the passion & drive that I have to meet certain goals and that at times makes me feel alone in this journey.

Joseph immediately knew how I felt as he explained to me his love for Judo and how his father didn’t understand his passion either. Joseph told me something I never realized and I will never forget, he said:

“This Journey is your OWN and no one else’s. You are ALONE!!!…and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. Don’t expect others to understand it”

All this time I was EXPECTING my family & friends to understand me and EXPECTED them to feel what I felt. Yeah it sucks that my family won’t come out to cheer me on in every single race because they can’t get up that early, but from now on I won’t get upset and I won’t expect them to come out. Instead I will continue to strive for my OWN goals in my own journey & I will be grateful and happy the day my family & friends do come to cheer me on.

Joseph Nicholas Sobus, I may be alone in my own journey but it doesn’t feel like I’m alone when I’m running with the WARRIORS!!!

  76. I guess this article was right! They conquered Pilsen now heading to Mexico! Hahaha So proud of being a Warrior!

    http://www.diariodemexicousa.com/article/entrenan-para-romper-r%C3%A9cord#.UCG-ac_tpTM.facebook

    Much Love for Da Sobus!

  77. I love this group. They not only are free but do a lot for the community. I have ran with them for two weeks now and I already feel as if i been a member forever. This group is really genuine and don’t have to fake posts in order to grab members. I promise you once you run with them you will feel at home.

  78. My two sons are in the little warriors. This group is making a huge difference in the Melrose park and in pilsen. Because of their program my son has an activity to do during the summer. Thank you so much.

  79. Warriors For Life!!

I have ran with many groups! Believe it or not this is the only group I have ran with that made me reach a 6:38 mile!! These guys great hard and differently than any other group out there. Not only are they tough but they help support local business and create real solutions to local problems. I am proud to be a Warrior for life!! So proud to wear their shirt!

Thank you and hope you join the tribe!!

  80. Never experienced a group like this

I just joined this group 6 months ago! I have only one word to describe this group,”Unity.” When I read all these comment about Mr. Sobus, it made me want to meet him. He did not disappoint at all. He will answer all your questions honestly and directly. He must know a thing about running an organization because he has elite runner training all his members. He also has but together a great group of 4 women that show equal leadership and he is not threatened when they shine! In fact, you see him take a step back and listen when they are talking.

This group is a the best group in Chicago!! I went to other groups and they can only bring 60 plus people during the week when they offer stuff for free. When you to one of their runs they make everyone feel like a winner!

Not only is Mr. Sobus, an example for the community by creating something that gives to their members instead of take, supports strong women leadership, and makes sure that everyone’s dreams are achieved in the group. If I could suggest to anyone thinking about join “The Tribe of Many”…..Do it!! It will change your life!!

    Always

  81. running is free, races are not

I think the warriors misunderdstand what it means when they say running is free. running is free, races are not. I was at a local chicago race and I spotted a few signs for the warrior running group. As I ran past some of there runners that were competing in the race I noticed that they did not have bibs on. Organizing races costs money. To see a club that is apparently “doing so many great things for the world”, (I guess they group thinks they are changing the world as some of these comments suggest) they should pay for the races that many times are benefiting a great cause! I saw them crossing the finish line, getting the finisher medals and taking part in post race festivites all while taking away from those runners that actually paid for race entry. Bandit running is not cool, races are not free and one loley little run group is not changing the world, one bandit race at a time.

    • Dear Running is Free, Races are not,

The only race they ran was the Rock n’ Roll Half. This is a picture of their members, which were covered by a National Mexican newspaper. If you notice only two are not wearing their bibs but all have the tracking tags on. They were given free admission because the group was being cover by the newspaper. Sorry, but you need to check your facts.

      http://www.diariodemexicousa.com/article/entrenan-para-romper-r%C3%A9cord

It’s so sad when people are hating on people or group that gives back to the community.

      Thanks,

      Kelly

  82. I am new to Pilsen and I been seeing them run for the past two weeks. So I decided to jump in their runs and I was shock to see that all their runners just started to greet me. They were so welcoming, I was surprised. They also promoted this one woman’s local business. She was so thankful that she offered them a special discount. I will be joining the group this Wednesday.

    Kim

  83. Great Running Group

I love this running group. I ran with them for the first time last week. I love them plus they have a couple of elite runners training them for free. It is a must join.

    Golden Bullet!

  84. running is free, races are not

Funny thing is that if you check the race results for the rock and roll half marathon there is no finisher time for Joe Sabus. Even if you get a free entry because you are “being featured” by a newspaper, you would get a bib number and a timing chip. So if you choose to only wear a timing chip, you would record a time, officially. Maybe the warriors are up to their old tricks again using other people’s bibs and chips, (i’ve read the other comments in this thread). oh well. keep on saving the world.

  85. The Warriors Running Group Documentary

Think maybe the people talking smack should watch this film about The Warriors Running Group. Then just join them because they are only the greatest running club in Chicago.

I can’t believe The Warriors Running Group had a Gala. That’s right some very important people showed up, they had event sponsors and they showed their new fall line of uniforms. 89. Did you miss last nights Warriors Run? Well, here is your chance to relive the whole experience again as if you were there. Our very talented warrior Wendy Lucia Lopez-Gonzalez wrote about last night’s run and we promise you will feel every moment as if you were there! http://www.tumblr.com/blog/thewarriorsrunninggroup

  90. This is going to be a very funny post but I just had to write about these guys. So when I started the race I saw this huge red sign reading, “THE WARRIORS RUNNING GROUP” and thought that was random. Then mile 4, I see the same sign with a larger group, yelling and full of energy. All this time, I am thinking to myself, “What the hell are The Warriors?” Finally, I see a new group on mile 12, same banner and this guy yelling at me, “Hey, if you are reading this then you are not running!”
I never have seen a group that is full of energy, enjoyed helping people and I joined their page. If you want to see there banner then check out this link.

  93. Thank you to all our Supporters!

The Warriors Running Group’s 2012 running season is coming to a close and as our Warriors will walk up to the starting line of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon 2012, it is important to look back and reflect on the struggles and sacrifices that our members faced in order to prepare for this journey. Starting the WRG did not come without our struggles and obstacles but it took strength and will
to surpass these growing pains. We have created something unique that we proudly share with the community.

Many of our successes are attributable to the leadership and support of the all-female board. Their efforts were the driving force behind WRG. It is because of these strong women that we have grown from a group of people coming together to being THE TRIBE OF MANY we are today.

Throughout the year, we had extraordinary athletes join us and a physical trainer that helped train our runners, give advice and tips on various aspect of running with one goal in mind. That is to make our members more efficient and better athletes.

Of all our successes thus far, we are most proud of our members. We could not ask for a better team. Our members are simply amazing individuals with amazing stories. Despite any challenges we may face, we all unite to support each other to create real change in our lives, communities and continue reaching our goals and dreams.

I would like to thank our members because your courage and empowering attitudes have given me one of the best experiences of my life. As you are walking up to the start line, you may feel alone but please look up next to you and I will assure you that there is a Warrior not too far away and The Tribe of Many will be there as you cross the finish line.

    Thank you,

    Joseph Sobus

  97. Nike creating more commericals on the Warriors Running Group

I am so proud to be a Warrior! I think every neighborhood should have a great group like them around! If you want to know why you should join them then all you have to do is watch them on this Nike Commercial.

  98. Observations.....

Funny but I don’t think I saw Mr. Sobus at Carrera de los Muertos which is THE race that highlights the Pilsen community. I wonder why he wouldn’t show up? Maybe he’s injured but if I was him, I would have ran this year to make up for the fiasco from last year’s race. But again, at the very least he should have shown up since he is about Pilsen and running. But I could be wrong, maybe he was wearing a mask and was there (probably not). Anyhow, not hating on the group as a whole, just observations. At the end of the day, I’d rather have runners running through my neighborhood instead of gangbangers, thugs, and drug dealers.

  99. Well Mr. O, Joseph Sobus was educating his parent on the common core standards. By the way, love how the people, who talk about the group still trwish they never left.y to get in their group pictures and wish they were never kicked out.

    Always,

    The Truth

  100. The Warriors had over 142 people attend their first fall run. Thank you for all the support. I was really shock that this group keeps growing. I am proud of becoming a warrior.

    Nancy

  101. Mr. O,

Mr. Sobus was not at the race because he was actually teaching his parents about common core standards. I am a parent at his school and run with the warriors. I am proud of the fact he has changed our school for bottom of the nation to top 13th in math and reading.Thank you Mr. Sobus. You are doing a great job and other are just upset they are not or cant do the same.

    Thank you,
    Racheal Jackson

Proud warrior mom and mother of a Job Corps student.

Let’s have a great running year!

  103. That is why the WRG is different from the all the rest!

The Warriors Running Group will make sure our members get access to experts in their field in order to make sure you cross the finish line!

Just wanted to share my experience using the WRG Sports and Ortho injury hotline number. I left my message with a description of my issues and heard back within 24 hrs. An Outreach Coordinator for Sports and Ortho asked me questions regarding my specific issues and took down my info. He asked me where I lived and sent my info to the Sports and Ortho PT on 31st and Canal St. in my neighborhood, Bridgeport, just a few blocks from my home. I went in for my free evaluation and met with the owner and founder of Sports and Ortho PT. She did some testing and gave me her assessment of what my problem is…my knees again!!! I had been to a chiropractor and another PT who did more strength training exercises but she feels I need stretching and flexibility PT to relieve the pressure in my calves, hips and knees. She sent a script in to my doctor and we are just waiting for him to approve it so I can begin my PT and best of all, since I am currently unemployed but do have medical insurance, and because I am Warrior member they worked with my insurance which is a huge burden lifted off my shoulders!!! Grateful to be a member of the WRG and if you are not a member, I urge you to join for the numerous benefits, besides this, of belonging to a great organization! –Jennifer S

It’s not too late to become a member of the WRG and get access to experts that can answer all your questions! Remember, if you are not speaking to someone that is certified then you are only getting an opinion.

  107. Our hearts go out to the victims and family members who experienced and were affected by the horrific events that took place at the Boston Marathon. There is a kinship that exists between runners; the love of hitting the pavement, the challenge and desire to push oneself to reach new levels. It is a feeling we, as runners, love and embrace. Yesterday’s unfortunate turn of events hit the running community hardest. In solidarity and in honor, The Warriors would love for you to join us for an honorary run on Sunday, April 21 at 1pm at Union Park. We hope you will join us! https://www.facebook.com/events/367414576703283/

  108. We would like to extend a special thank you to Univision for featuring the Solidarity Run hosted by the WRG. Thank you to all the runners and running groups who came out to unite and run for Boston! It was a pleasure running along side all of you in the name of a good cause.

    Boston in our hearts!!

  109. The Warriors Running Group has launch our new website!! Please check out http://www.wrgrun.com/!!

  110. I would like to take this time to thank everyone for a great season thus far. A representative from Fleet Feet congratulated us for not only setting the standard for running groups but having all our runner hit their PRs plus having most of our runners beat their pacers.

In all honestly, I really don’t feel that should matter. There are a couple of reasons that we are awesome group.

    1. we have great board members that are not only strong, have the highest morals and focus on the things that matter, not gimmicks. (Sandy Barrera, Rocio Vallejo, Claudia Kaya Hernandez, and of course Veronica Juana Diaz.)

    2. We have great coaches Daisy Ventura, Guillermo G. Gómez, Jason Pence, Pedro Garcia, Celia Corral, Eduardo Ceja, Heather Benjamin and Erico Barrera, through their commitment, passion, leadership and willing to sacrifice their wants in order to see others reach their goals is amazing.

    3. All our sponsorships.

    4. Last but most important…..Our members that not only share our vision, high values, passion but allow us to create an environment where everyone is welcomed, supported and continue to make the Warriors Running Group innovative.

Thank you to everyone for letting me live my dreams.

    Always,

    Sobus

  111. Your Warrior Journey!!

Our Midway coach Cecil Corral asked the question, “Why do you run?”

The WRG would like to capture your stories and have your stories inspire other to keep looking towards tomorrow. Life can hand us challenges that get a lot easier when there are a tribe of people behind you. Please share your stories and feel proud because your story is another person’s page one!
