Boxing Matches Fixed for the Hype

This weekend was full of sports action, but none compared to the much-anticipated third fight between Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao. The stage was set for these two warriors to decide who the winner of this trilogy would be.

As a lifelong boxing fan, I had read every article, watched every interview, and re-screened the previous two fights to prepare and fully understand the magnitude of this final and legacy deciding bout. But it seems that Marquez was not meant to beat Pacquiao. More interestingly, it also seems Pacquiao was not meant to win either.

Pacquiao looked anything but invincible and failed to establish himself as the clear winner. But the judges still scored a majority decision. The biggest problem with this decision, in my view, is that the cards seemed to be influenced not by what we saw in the ring, but by the potential payout from a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. Only days after the controversial fight, the Pacquiao camp is already projecting a payout of $100 million for a fight against Floyd Mayweather. Let’s not forget how much money Vegas has to lose if Pacquiao had lost.

Boxing has a sketchy past with decisions being influenced by outside forces, this is no secret. The greater tragedy lies in the denial of legendary status for Marquez and denying Mexican boxing fans of their next great champion. I expect this latest debacle to hurt boxing’s image further. It’s hard to get behind a sport that time after time feeds its fans not what they want or what is fair, but what makes the most money for the house. Maybe this is why the sport has lost so many fans to sports like Mixed Martial Arts.

Este fin de semana estuvo lleno de acción en los deportes, pero nada comparado con la tan anticipada tercera pelea entre Juan Manuel Márquez y Manny Pacquiao. El escenario estaba puesto para que estos dos guerreros decidieran quién sería el ganador de esta trilogía.

Como fanático del boxeo de toda la vida, he leído cada artículo, he visto cada entrevista, y he re-examinado las dos previas peleas para prepararme y completamente entender la magnitud de esta pelea final de decisión de legado. Pero parece que Márquez no estaba destinado a vencer a Pacquiao. Más interesante, parece ser que tampoco Pacquiao estaba destinado a ganar.

Pacquiao se veía de todo menos invencible y no logró establecerse como el claro ganador. Pero los jueces calificaron una decisión mayoritaria. El mayor problema con esta decisión, en mi punto de vista, es que las tarjetas parecían ser influenciadas no por lo que vimos en el cuadrilátero, pero por la paga potencial de la pelea Pacquiao-Mayweather. A sólo días de la controversial pelea, el campamento de Pacquiao ya está proyectando un pago de $100 millones por la pelea contra Floyd Mayweather. No olvidemos cuando dinero hubiera perdido Las Vegas si Pacquiao hubiera perdido.

El boxeo tiene un pasado incompleto con las decisiones influenciadas por fuerzas externas, esto no es un secreto. La mayor tragedia se encuentra en la negación del estatus legendario de Márquez y negarle a los fanáticos mexicanos a su próximo gran campeón. Espero que este reciente debacle dañe la imagen del boxeo aún más. Es difícil estar detrás de un deporte que de ocasión en ocasión alimenta a sus seguidores no le que quieren o es justo, pero lo que hace que la casa gane más dinero. Quizá es por esto que el deporte ha perdido a tantos seguidores que siguen otros deportes como la Artes Marciales Mixtas.
