Unemployment Rates and the Free Market Spirit

Recently, THE GATE published an article addressing unemployment and the ways people in minority communities were dealing with it. The article highlighted how people in a society with a struggling economy can take the reins of the free market spirit and progress without the assistance or intrusion of government. There are plenty of examples of the creation of free market economics in struggling economies, especially if we look at the fall of centralist and communist governments throughout history.

Guadalupe Terraza, a local singer and guitar player, is an example of the drive and determination humans have to survive. The spirit to overcome adversity, especially in a demographic where the odds are strongly stacked against you, the ability to calculate risk and reward is the cornerstone of invention and entrepreneurship.

Communities should look at these under appreciated members, they are role models. This is what the American Spirit is all about, taking responsibility for your situation and trying to improve it. Terrazas mentioned in the article his fear of performing in public, but instead of making an excuse he did what he had to do to feed his family.

We can also take away a good example of what people in low income areas need. They need money to buy food, get their kids to school and pay for the roof over their heads. These people who are finding ways to make ends meet are not worried about luxuries or minimum wage. Social safety net mandates have failed our communities and restrained small business from thriving. Our communities can benefit from the creation of small business because it will drive job growth and economic stability in our neighborhood.

Communities like ours would benefit from the removal of minimum wage mandates that hurt the poor instead of protecting them, which is how the regulation is sold to voters. The minimum wage keeps small business from hiring employees during inception and growth phases. Some people just need a job and a small paycheck, and some businesses can’t afford to pay the required minimum wage which is what keeps them from opening. But the business that could give a consenting employee a wage could.

I am not advocating taking advantage of people or paying people less than their labor is worth. Allowing the free market to function without government intervention will help entrepreneurs and creative business men like Terrazas to create opportunities not only for themselves, but for the entire community.
