6th Annual We Are Hip Hop Festival: For the People by the People

While mainstream “hip hop” has come to be associated with its often violent and sexist lyrics, local youth have taken it upon themselves to restore the music genre in order to promote peace and unity in the community of Pilsen.

For the sixth year in a row, Pros Arts Studio youth have organized, marketed and promoted the We Are Hip Hop Festival, a one-day event that will showcase local artists, emcees, deejays and breakdancers.

“Pilsen is known to be a creative and artistic neighborhood, yet there are still many obstacles we face every day with gang violence, drug activity, and most importantly gentrification,” said Eric “Phero” Lopez, a local emcee artist and partner of the festival. “It’s festivals like ‘We Are Hip Hop Festival’ that show light on how the community can work together in harmony and have our youth be involved in something positive.”

The festival will feature graffiti battles, live art, and student performances by Pros Arts Studio. According to the festival’s Facebook page, the youth-run event “preserves the true meaning of hip hop, productively harnessing the youth’s talent and keeps them off the street.”

The festival is free, all ages and will take place Saturday, August 13, 2011 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Dvorak Park, 1119 W. Cullerton.

6º Festival Anual Somos el Hip Hop: Del Pueblo para el Pueblo

Mientras que el “hip hop” actual ha llegado a ser relacionado con sus a menudo violentas y sexistas letras, jóvenes locales se han propuesto a restaurar el género musical con el fin de promover la paz y la unidad en la comunidad de Pilsen.

Por sexto año consecutivo, los jóvenes del Estudio Pros Arts han organizado, comercializado y promovido el festival Somos el Hip Hop, un evento de un día que exhibirá a artistas locales, conductores, deejays y bailarines de break dance.

“Pilsen se conoce como un vecindario creativo y artístico, no obstante, aún hay muchos obstáculos que enfrentamos cada día con la violencia entre pandillas, la actividad de drogas, y lo más importante, gentrificación”, dijo Eric “Phero” López, un artista conductor local y colaborador del festival. “Son los festivales como ‘Somos el Hip Hop’ que ponen a la luz cómo la comunidad puede trabajar junta en harmonía y que nuestros jóvenes participen en algo positivo”.

El festival presentará batallas de grafiti, arte en vivo, y actuaciones de los estudiantes del Estudio Pros Arts. Según el portal de Facebook del festival, el evento coordinado por jóvenes “preserva el verdadero significado del hip hop, aprovechando positivamente el talento de los jóvenes y los mantiene fuera de las calles”.

El festival es gratuito, para todas las edades y se llevará a cabo el sábado 13 de agosto de la 1 p.m. a las 6 p.m. en el Parque Dvorak, 1119 W Cullerton.
