Illinois Saves Graduates Local Residents

On Tuesday, June 28, a group of men and women from Back of the Yards and other Chicago neighborhoods became the newest generation of graduates of Illinois Saves, a financial literacy program certified by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) and administered by Heartland Human Care Services.

Illinois Saves is a course designed to educate consumers so that they are able to control their own finances, according to Brent E. Adams, IDFPR Secretary. He also mentioned that one of the major goals of the program is to increase consumers’ reliance on savings while at the same time reducing their reliance on credit.

The program offered participants information about budgeting, financial products including bank accounts and investment options, developing a credit history, building assets, and building consumers skills; all very essential tools to develop financial stability.

Many of the graduates were parents who attended the courses at various Chicago high schools, while others completed their courses thanks to a partnership with the Illinois Education and Foundation and NHS, at other sites. Classes were offered in English and Spanish.

Among those present were Emilio Carrasquillo, Director of NHS, Carmen Jimenez, Employer Partnership Manager at Heartland Human Care Services, Manuel “Manny” Flores Director of Division of Banking at IDFPR and Brent E. Adams, IDFPR Secretary.

Upon graduation, the participants gained a better understanding of various financial options that will help them avoid the cycle of debt in which many workers find themselves. Graduates will be able to obtain a free Illinois Saves account.

Illinois Saves le da la Bienvenida a su Nueva Generación de Graduados

El martes 28 de junio, un grupo de hombres y mujeres de Back of the Yards y de otros vecindarios de Chicago se convirtió en la más reciente generación de graduados de Illinois Saves, un programa de educación financiera certificado por el Departamento de Regulación Financiera y Profesional de Illinois (IDFPR) y administrado por Heartland Human Care Services.

Illinois Saves es un curso diseñado para educar a consumidores con el fin de que puedan controlar sus propias finanzas, según Brent E. Adams, Secretario de IDFPR. Él también mencionó que una de las metas del programa es aumentar la dependencia de los consumidores en los ahorros mientras que al mismo tiempo reducen su dependencia en el crédito.

El programa ofreció a los participantes información sobre presupuestos, productos financieros incluyendo cuentas bancarias y opciones de inversión, creación de historial de crédito, creación de activos, y crear habilidades del consumidor; todas herramientas muy esenciales para desarrollar estabilidad financiera.

Muchos de los graduados eran padres que asistieron a los cursos en varias secundarias de Chicago, mientras otros completaron sus cursos gracias a una sociedad con la Fundación Educativa de Illinois y NHS, en otros sitios. Las clases fueron ofrecidas en inglés y en español.
