Crime Stoppers: Keeping Neighborhoods Safe

Back of the Yards has seen it all—hopeful arriving immigrants from Ireland, Poland, and Mexico, hardworking residents expanding their roots and cultures blending rapidly as years passed.

As Back of the Yards became the community that welcomed everyone regardless of their country of origin, their race or ethnic background, it also became vulnerable to an ill phenomenon –neighborhood violence.

To offset the violence over the years, organizations like the Cook County Crime Stoppers have worked along with neighborhood residents to decrease criminal activity and successfully fight off crime.

Bringing together Cook County citizens, law enforcement agencies, businesses and the media, Crime Stoppers works to fight crime by encouraging people to anonymously report tips on criminal activity. This non-profit, non-partisan organization works as a third party between residents and the police, providing a safeguard for those afraid of being sought after.

“One thing that we understand is that there’s a code of silence amongst residents of an area,” said Paul Rutherford, Crime Stoppers vice chairman. “People are afraid to talk because of retaliation and they’re afraid of being labeled as a snitch or a rat. We take that factor out by allowing them to call us and remain anonymous. “

Crime Stoppers allows residents to report a crime through a phone hotline or text message via an encrypted text messaging service. Both services are anonymous as phone numbers are never traced and names are not needed.  Rather an alias is given to the resident for complete anonymity. If a tip leads to an arrest, Crime Stoppers provides a $1,000 reward to the resident.

“Crime stoppers is vital right now and people need to utilize it,” said Rutherford. “For example, just 40 hours after we held a press conference at a neighborhood school announcing our text and tip service, weapons were confiscated based on a tip that came through a text.”

Since its start, according to Crime Stoppers, the organization has been successful helping federal, state and local law enforcement agencies recover over $21 million in property and illegal narcotics. Furthermore, according to Rutherford, last year the organization helped clear 12 homicide cases because of the tips that came through from residents.

But Crime Stoppers isn’t only a liaison between the police and residents. Along with the tip hotline and text messaging service, Crime Stoppers works with the families of crime victims—helping them cope with the loss of a loved one and helping them seek justice for the crime. With a great belief in prevention, Rutherford also visits neighborhood schools to encourage youth to stay off the streets and avoid criminal activity.

“My passion is to solve crimes, my passion is to prevent crime and to bring closure to the victim’s family,” said Rutherford. “I believe in prevention.”

Back of the Yards ha visto de todo—inmigrantes llenos de esperanzas procedentes de Irlanda, Polonia, y México, residentes trabajadores que intentan expandir sus raíces y culturas acoplándose rápidamente  al paso de los años.

Mientras Back of the Yards se convertía en la comunidad que acogía a todos a pesar de su país de origen, raza u origen étnico, también se hizo vulnerable a un desafortunado fenómeno—la violencia en el vecindario.

Para contrarrestar la violencia de los últimos años, organizaciones como Crime Stoppers (Frenadores del Crimen) del Condado de Cook han trabajado en conjunto con los residentes del vecindario para disminuir la actividad criminal y combatir con éxito la delincuencia.

Uniendo a los ciudadanos del Condado de Cook, las agencias  policiacas, los negocios y los medios, Crime Stoppers trabaja para combatir el crimen incitando a los ciudadanos a reportar anónimamente cualquier actividad delictiva. Esta organización sin fines de lucro, no partidaria trabaja como tercero entre residentes y la policía, proporcionando protección para aquellos que temen ser buscados.

“Una cosa que entendemos es que hay un código de silencio entre los residentes de un área”, dijo Paul Rutherford, vicepresidente de Crime Stoppers. “A la gente le da miedo hablar por temor a las represalias y tienen miedo de ser calificados como soplones o ratas. Crime Stoppers le da la oportunidad a los residentes de reportar un crimen a través de una línea telefónica de alertas o vía texto por medio de un servicio de mensajería de texto cifrado. Ambos servicios son anónimos ya que los números telefónicos nunca son rastreados y los nombres son innecesarios. Más bien, se le asigna un apodo al residente para asegurar el total anonimato. Si una llamada conduce al arresto, Crime Stopers recompensa al residente con $1,000.

“Crime stoppers es vital en estos momentos y la gente necesita utilizarlos”, dijo Rutherford. “Por ejemplo, a sólo 40 horas de haber realizado una conferencia de prensa en un escuela del vecindario donde anunciamos nuestro servicio de textos y llamadas, confiscamos varias armas basados en una alerta que recibimos por medio de un texto”.

Desde su inicio, según Crime Stoppers, la organización ha ayudado exitosamente a agencias policiacas a nivel federal, estatal y local a recuperar más de $21 millones in propiedades y narcóticos ilegales. Además según Rutherford, el año  pasado la organización ayudó a esclarecer 12 casos de homicidio por las alertas que recibieron de los residentes.

Pero Crime Stopers no sólo es un enlace entre la policía y los residentes. Junto con la línea de alertas y el servicio de textos, Crime Stoppers trabaja con las familias de víctimas del crimen—ayudándolas a hacer frente a la pérdida de algún ser querido y ayudándolos a buscar justicia por el crimen.

Con una gran creencia en la prevención, Rutherford también visita las escuelas del vecindario para incitar a los jóvenes a mantenerse fuera de las calles y evitar la actividad delictiva.

“Mi pasión es resolver crímenes, mi pasión es prevenir el crimen y darle cierre a la familia de la víctima”, dijo Rutherford. “Creo en la prevención”.
